Some class 24s were also converted to electric heat, as static carriage heating units I think. Did they ever run in trains like the ETHELs?
24054 and 24142, as ADB968008/9. Only used staticly as far as I know.
There were also four class 15s (D8243, 8233, 8237 and 8203: ADB968000-003 in that order) and four class 31/0s (31013, 31002, 31014 and 31008: ADB968013-016).

24054 is preserved, and D8233 is being restored to working order.

I've posted this photo previously, but here it is again - an ETHEL at Marylebone, 29th of November 1986:
By comparison, the same ETHEL, but No 2 end, on Eastfield depot in October 84.

After withdrawal in 1976 two Class 24s were converted into static ETH pre-heating units for BR (WR) Mk2 carriages.
24054 became TDB968008 allocated to Newton Abbott.
24142 became TDB968009 allocated to Landore.
The two ex-locos were withdrawn c.October 1982

Here's a bit of info on 24054 / TDB 968008

The 15s and the 31/0s were steam pre-heating, weren't they? Rather than ETH pre-heating.

Here are 968001/9 at Stratford in 1982. Probably already withdrawn?

No, they were for ETH pre heating at locations that did not have shore supply. When first converted the BTHs were also used for staff training on new aircon MarkIIds at various ECML locations. The best known use of the Brush Type 2s was at Yarmouth between the arrival of aircons in East Anglia in 1980 and opening of Crown Point at Norwich in 1982.

As we are now talking Class 15s, I have an excuse to repost this photo of ADB968000, taken the same day as the ETHEL photo above, and also at Marylebone:

Whether by accident or design, two of those kept the last two digits of their original numbers
D8203/ADB968003, 31013/ADB968013.
But 31014 did not became ADB968014

I remember reading when they were 1st introduced that driving controls were to left in situ so that the train loco could be driven from the ethel and avoid run round , this was quickly changed before conversion

Whoever thought that obviously failed to engage brain, as the locos they worked with would have needed through ETH cables.
