Tried to travel this last year but was thwarted due to the aforementioned works. Does anyone know when these works may be completed or what the situation is going forward?

Oops, scope of the work was increased and the usual difficulties were encountered.
ADIF spokesman, according to this news article from last December, said hoping to reopen in April.
I would wait until it actually reopens before planning anything, myself.
