Over the Easter weekend the bridge over the A24 East Street in Epsom was replaced.
This sequence of pictures shows the new up side deck being lifted into place at around 15.00 on Sunday 24th. The down side deck was lifted in an hour later; both decks weighed 72 tonnes and the crane was rated at 73 tonnes, so a bit of mathematical precision there!
Once each deck was secured and balanced, the entire lift of each took only 10 minutes - very impressive, especially considering the restricted nature of the site ( yes, it is directly above the roofs of the flats in the background! ) and well worth watching.
Quite a crowd gathered to watch this operation, which had in fact been postponed as it was originally scheduled for 02.00 in the morning, however one of the chains was found to be suspect so the engineers wisely decided to send for a whole new set which had to be sent from Dartford.
