Enviro 400s in London

Apologies if this has been ask, but...

Why do the original style Enviro 400s in London have a massive vent looking thing smack bang in between the top and bottom windows, while other 400s elsewhere in the country don't?

Interesting how the 400s in London have air-cooling, while the versions outside do not.

Air cooling, as specified by TfL. Outside the capital most operators consider it unnecessary (just open a window), but there are a fair few examples of it.

It is air cooling, as the fans run (and make a distinct sound when standing outside) when the vents on the offside of the upper deck ceiling are giving out cold air. The earliest E400s in London (until about the start of 07-reg) don't have air cooling and therefore don't have the fans and the ceiling vents.

Heating on the upper deck works through the floor level vents on the nearside, although good luck finding many buses with it actually working!

First West of England 33411-33419 allocated to Weston super Mare have these fitted. There is a large box on the ceiling above the stairs on these vehicles, which pumps the coil air through from the fans ato the back.

This may be due to the fact that they were ordered to a higher spec for Plymouth Park & Ride services. They even have coach seats and airline style radio ports for each seat, but alas they have been disconnected.

You also struggle to find an E400 round here which has decent heating and this includes the 63 plate vehicles, which don't have the air cooling.
