incorrect,there only payment for this world cup was in bonus payments if they win quarter final matches onwards. the bbc made a big thing about this, and bbc journalists have commented that players obviously dont care if theres no money involved

their also paid "expenses" so one would imagine them to be more than generous, although the female england world cup squad was limited to £40 a day expense claimsw

As for this money issue, football has become a mountain of money and nothing else. Sir Staney Matthews would be rolling his in grave if he knew of things like £80m transfers for whinging winkers. He played until his was 50 - it was a living to men of his era, not a method of making squillions a day!

at the level i play rugby, were given a fiver for petrol and a tea afterwards and maybe a pint if were lucky, were in the 6th tier, so equivalent to one down from the football conference!

I think Jimmy Hill is partly to blame, he was one of the primary figures in the abolition of the maximum wage.

Ok fair point but is there enough talent coming through in Ingerland to make the grade. Up here in Scotland we've got plenty talent but the Scotland team is a loady pash and we know we are

Too right. Capello made a mistake selecting some players for the squad (Heskey anyone?) and another mistake was trying to play Gerrard and Lampard in the same team. How many years has this been tried? And how many times has it been successful?

I agree with getting rid of Terry, as not only did he try to undermine Gerrard as captain, but belittle Capello as well.

The problem with trying to play both Gerrard and Lampard is that they are both attacking midfielders, and there is only room for 1 in the standard 4-4-2. Gerrard was wasted out on the left, while Lampard played way to deep. IE, recieving a 5 yard pass from a defender on the halfway line.

Barry only had an average tournament playing as the anchor in midfield, so he's up for the chop as well. By the way, where was Owen Hargreaves? Was he injured?

Upson is a defender who should never be considered for England again. He had possibly the worst performance I've seen from an England player against Germany. He was that bad, both Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson were covering for him in the center of defence....

Also, who do we play in goal now? David James is nearly 40, Rob Green appears to have inhereted the calamity tag, so that leaves us with a choice of Ben Foster, Joe Hart and Chris Kirkland. Inspiring .....

The consensus of opinion down my local is that Joe Hart should be given the goalkeepers jersey on a long term basis!

Mind you, the consenus of opinion was also that Brazil were going to lift the trophy!

Gerrard and Lampard should only play together in a 4-4-1-1 with Gerard playing behind Rooney.

For Keeper, my vote would go to Joe Hart at the moment. We had him on loan last season (Birmingham City supporter) and he was one of the reasons we had such a good season - he should have started against the USA

If Ben Foster has such a good season the season coming (as he is our new keeper), I would hope he comes back into the frame as well.

And for the record, we had Heskey and Upson playing for us at one time and we're well rid of them to be honest. Also my mate (Villa fan) was very happy that Gareth Barry had a poor World Cup

Isn't Lampard 32 now? Won;t be long before his legs are gone. Perhaps they have now, which is why he was playing deep!

And Spain gave us all a lesson in how to play yesterday. Germany only had 5 attempts on goal (4 on target) in that match compared to 15 attempts on goal (9 on target) against England and 17 attempts on goal (11 on target) against Argentina (stats from BBC Website)

Well said Kneedown, footballers are nothing but over-paied pre-maddonnas who think everyone should bow down to them (prime example was when Wayne roony had a pop at supporters for booing)

Footballers should get the rates of pay troops get around £12-£15k upon entry into the services
