Engineering work between Ely and Stansted Airport, 11-12 Dec

NRE reports that there's some engineering work between Ely and Stansted Airport over the weekend of 11-12 December. Changes to services, and details of RRBs aren't currently in the Journey Planner, just warning triangles.

But the NRE notice says this affects only Cross Country. And it's infuriatingly imprecise about just where the works are taking place. From a personal, self-interested perspective, it makes all the difference which side of Cambridge is affected!

Anyone care to offer some thoughts on this? Why are only XC services affected? Other operators run on every metre of track between Ely and the airport, so how come they aren't affected? And is it usual for NRE announcements to be so vague about the location of forthcoming works when there's a multiplicity of other operators' services which might - or might not - be caught up in the works?

Because the other operators such as Greater Anglia and particularly GTR won't have had their amended timetable plans for that week finalised or published yet. Particularly with GTR, it will be probably around a month until they are.

It's not unusual for services to be thinned rather than withdrawn completely. Some works may not be an all line block but capacity is restricted due to single line working, two-track (not in this case) or amendments to Operator A meaning they are taking up more space at Location A so Operator B decides they don't need to serve Location A. Or are told they can't.
