it looks like the regular Sunday service from Southport to Stockport and Chester will be going no futher than Manchester Picaddilly tomorrow. All services will be diverted via Atherton it seems and they'll run from Wigan into Picaddilly without stopping at any other station which I find very unusual. I have never known this to happen before. Anybody know why this is and what these engineering works are all about?

Seems to be a lot of track renewals planned between Manchester and Southport in the second half of this year.

The Atherton line, which needs it the most, doesn't seem to be getting any works done on it apart from the railway bridge work which has just started; and which will create chaos for Wigan traffic when the road over it shuts until December. The other section of track that is in a very poor state is from Meols Cop to New lane. That cause some horrific sudden sideways movement in a pacer when going at Line speed. Im surprised the speed limit hasn't been reduced over that section.

Atherton line is looking to something like a month of early evening closures later this year, Wallgate itself is going to face a 7-10 day long blockade and bus replacement which of course severs the Kirkby and Southport lines.

It's been like that for as long as I can remember. always a rough ride!

Does anyone know what went wrong yesterday (Friday morning) besides signal failure - cable theft?? trains eventually turned round at parbold and many cancellations from national rail. Just missed it all as I arrived back from london to manc at 3pm

Never mind, just seen there is a topic dedicated to it..

Strange, according to NatR it's everything between Salford West Jcn, Lostock Jcn and Wigan Stat Jcns thats closed (Atherton Loop and Bolton - Wigan). Everything else normal though Bolton.

Just have this:

Altrincham-Chester
Saturday and Sunday 2 and 3 July – structures maintenance.

Manchester Victoria – Todmorden
Sundays 7, 14, 21 and 28 August and Monday 29 August – resignalling work.

Hindley, Wigan Wallgate, Southport and Kirby
Saturday 22 to Sunday 30 October – renewal of trackwork at Wigan Wallgate (services between Hindley, Wigan Wallgate, Southport and Kirby will be seriously affected with a rail replacement service provided). The benefits to passengers of the work will be provision of a more reliable railway and a smoother ride quality.

Manchester and Wigan via Atherton
Monday to Thursday nights until 9 September – night track renewal work affecting late evening trains.

Manchester – Liverpool via Eccles
From December onwards electrification work will affect services at certain times. This follows a considerable amount of work at the Manchester end of the route to ensure that bridges have sufficient clearance space for the overhead wires to be installed.
Members will be provided with further details of the electrification works as they become available.

Picking a few dates at random on Natrail engineering planner says its services from around 10:30 from Southport or Victoria affected.

I was wondering if the work would have included some re-pointing on the small overbridges that I mentioned as I looked at some recently and this work needs doing on some of them.

The Southport Flower Show this year is from 18th to 21st August and some of the older visitors do go by train.
