Live departure board for Wigan shows a Virgin train about to leave Crewe, calling at Chester, Warrington Bank, Wigan and Preston. Tad unusual?

Virgin are running Crewe - Chester - Warrington - Preston shuttles

It's been put in as expected departure from Crewe at 10:00 but departed 75 minutes late.

Even more unusual as ATW are running a replacement bus service between Chester and Warrington Bank Quay.

There appears to be no replacement bus service operating between Liverpool South Parkway and Crewe, that leaves Runcorn, Acton Bridge, Hartford and Winsford a bit screwed.

They don't mention the bus service on their website - they say it's running normally. (although I guess this is scheduled, there is no mention of it on the National Rail engineering work page either).

There is allegedly a bus from Runcorn to Crewe.
Passengers travelling between Runcorn and Crewe / London Euston should travel by replacement bus service to Crewe. A train service is running between Liverpool Lime Street and Runcorn.

A shame the Halton Curve has still not been reinstated. It could have offered a diversionary route via Chester.

It is scheduled and included in the current timetable as a bus service.

Just looking at it again, the line between Chester and Warrington is probably open as it would be to do with Chat Moss electrification work and ATW are running Manchester-Llandudno services via Stockport, so the usual units and crews for a Sunday will be fully deployed without running a Warrington-Chester service.

There is allegedly a bus from Runcorn to Crewe.

Only from Runcorn to Crewe? That's not going to get people from Hartford/Winsford to Liverpool very easily.

It can be used for Chester-Liverpool but not in reverse.

Merseyrail definitely running a 15 min service.

BBC News confirms this:

Commuters travelling from Wigan North Western or Warrington Bank Quay have also been advised to travel to London via Manchester Piccadilly.

Merseyrail is running services from Liverpool to Chester every 15 minutes.

Fans will be able to catch trains from Chester to Crewe to pick up connecting services to London.

Affected passengers may also use First TransPennine Express and Northern Rail services between Liverpool and Manchester, Arriva Trains Wales services between Chester and Crewe and CrossCountry and East Midlands Trains on any reasonable route.

London Midland said it hoped to have services up and running by 14:00 GMT.

Worrying when passengers have to rely on a News website for accurate info...

I imagine it is because Merseyrail Electrics can't guarantee the timetable for the additional services.

A bus is operating between Runcorn and Crewe.

The 1448 LIV-EUS is expected to run.

Tickets now accepted on East Coast, EMT, Arriva Trains Wales, CrossCountry, First Transpennine, Northern and Merseyrail Electrics. Quite a comprehensive response really...

It is a shame that the Halton Curve hasn't been used today. London-Crewe-Chester-Liverpool-Manchester/Warrington-Crewe-London...

Quite a comprehensive response or a bit of a PR gimmick? What use is TPE, EMT, CrossCountry and East Coast for someone travelling from Lancashire or Merseyside to London? That is unless they don't mind a hundred mile detour and probably getting there tomorrow.

Erm, it a bit under two hours from Liverpool to Leeds (using a mixture of TPE and Northern) then about two and half hours to London from Leeds. Looking up on journey planner you could catch the 13:06 from Liverpool and be in London by 17:30 (going via Leeds). Or you could take 13:52 to Sheffield and be in London for 18:12 (travelling on EMT). Both seem a pretty reasonable detour to me and far far preferable to being stuck on a coach.

I know what you mean, ATW Chester/Manchester on Sunday via Stockport,:)

thanks for the info

You were correct, suppose the Merseyrail website is where most would look, alas it said nothing of the 15 min runs.

I hear Marylebone is rammed full, according to a colleague.

D'oh!, I forgot that Chester to Manchester joined that line!

Although it still isn't mentioned in the 'engineering works' section on National Rail - it only says that there are buses between Liverpool and Earlestown.

Preston to London via TPE or Northern to Manchester... hardly a detour.

Liverpool to London via EMT or TPE to Manchester... exactly what NRE and Virgin were advising everyone do.

Scotland to London via East Coast; Scotland to Birmingham via East Coast and/or XC, or TPE and XC. (Also remember Virgin were operating a normal service north of Preston anyway.)

Seriously, what are you on about? Do you not know where TOCs run? None of these are massive detours; none of them will delay you by much more than an hour (except maybe Glasgow to Birmingham via the East Coast).

I think the whole incident was handled very well. I was allowed to travel on the 0810 from EUS instead of the 0815. We were told to get off at Crewe for a bus. Sadly this information was miscommunicated to the TM as the bus was only for Runcorn. Unphased, we went to Chester then on Merseyrail to Lime Street - only 10 mins later than we would have been via Manchester and I covered CRE-CTR and CTR-Hamilton Sq for the first time. :)

On the way back, the trolley wally got on at Runcorn - full FC service appeared within minutes and we're only going to be c.20 late into Euston. Well done, Virgin. :D

Some inaccurate news that a Virgin train had derailed.......

The picture editor has since been sacked:)

Bob

I watched the penalties, both sides were awful, considering they are supposed professionals,Stress & pressure, welcome to the real world.
But in the 120 minutes a good game. Back to rail where the real professionals work.
