So I'm an Engineering student doing a project on locomotive axles. Could someone please help me out by explaining what an: End Coupled Axle, Intermediate Coupled Axle, and End Coupled Wheels are? I've scoured the internet but I can't find anything. Or being pointed in the right direction would be great, thanks.

I believe, that it is to do with the location of the wheel/axle connection to the motor/drive shaft.

These are not terms I routinely come across, but it would make sense if:
A locomotive is driving several pairs of wheels from one power source - eg an 0-6-0 tank steam locomotive would drive the centre pair of wheels from the steam pistons through rods and levers to the middle pair of wheels. This would be the intermediate coupled axle. Further rods would be used to couple the intermediate coupled axle to the other two which in this instance would be the end coupled axles. for four coupled axles, there would be two intermediate coupled axles and for five coupled axles there would be three.

Hope this helps

It may be worth checking a) which language or continent the question comes from and b) what type or age of locos you are considering.
It looks as though we are trying to second-guess a question set by a non-railway person.
