Engineering on the Railways (what to do?)

I'm wanting to work on the railways in engineering, somwhere in the copy and pastes below are me options, any more and any opinions?

Coming from the Class 180 thread:

whats wrong with alstom? thats one of the companies I might end up lumbered being working for, or should I pick bombardier or siemens instead?

Nym there's nothing wrong with Alstom as a company, just the crap style of trains they (all) produce these days. I just prefer real trains that are designed to be driven rather than the ones you have to monitor whats going wrong with it more than looking where you are going.

Hmmmmm... Decitions Decitions;

Rail Industry: ATOC APEDS, Alstom, Bombardier or Siemens (where I'll probs end up fixing traffic lights.
Power Industry: Drax Power Station, Energy Managment or somthing similar.
or Research... (Not an option cos it's not a job!)

Also, BP will pay s*** loads...

Back to on topic, the're no worse than how we'd build them, and even the germans don't get everything right, although the bit thats wrong in the 185s is that little bit that they let the americans design, hehe. Same in the 180s if it's engine problems thats the fault of Cummins, not Alstom

If your aged 16-18 apply for the network rail advanced apprenticeship scheme. Whikst your there you'll rgret it, but believe me, and I'm talking from experiance, you regret it more once You've quit.

If your older, then just as a casural labour may be your best option, working in possesions, Network Rail often only recruit skilled engineers, but if you have a trade behind you, they may look at you without laughing at you. I don't know much about the stock maintanence side of things, but if you want a chat about the NWR AAS then just PM me

I should add:
Currently half way through a MEng Course with entitlement to CEng accredited by the IET and IEEE. Electromechanical (Mechatronic) Engineering

I did go to a Network Rail conference on graduate recruitment but they did come off as a bit desprate for Signals Engineers, apparently the development team is 4 blokes in a portakabin... They did come off as despriate, 33k + London Al + Travel Alowance + ATOC National Rover + 3k golden handshake!

BP Only pay 29k! (37 if you work rigs), maybe they'd take off all my registration costs and exam fees for the IET, (about £4000pa for 4 years )

I think that you will find its "Cav" at the end of My name fella! Otherwise I might let you see the engineering involved in a class 158 at 90mph, from the four foot level. Oh & that name is there for a reason.

Get on the Ertms team(or whatever they are currently calling themselves today), sure fire way of either getting in or failing big time.....

Again, was thinking of APEDS because I'd get to work on the older stuff, just don't wanna be sat in an office all my life, because thats BBBOOORRRIIINNGG, and thats what NotworkFail would have me doing, aparently too valuble to have a postgrad engineer with lots of postnominals working on the ground, cos according to business school students you have to be in an office with lots of microsoft software to know whats happening on the railways...

Same in any business btw, not just the railways

Hey Nutter, I'm sorry you feel that way, but it was busting your balls so better left behind you mate. Any more rail related jobs in the pipeline? I am still keeping my eye on chances with our side for you. You dont have ginger (ish) hair do you? I passed a couple of youths watching trains from either albrighton or codsall footbridge last week. I was doing about 75 though, which was why I wasnt looking that much as linespeed is 70........... That may be a fib if anyone important is reading this. :neutral:

Oh & I actually got engaged on Albrighton footbridge back in december, well I liked the location & actually so did she....... Amazed.

if you see somone on the end of manchester picc platforms 8 and 9, looks about 20ish, long blond hair, leather jacket using a mobile to take pictures and seeing if anyone is still sat on your train when you're about to pull into the sidings, thats me. Theres somtimes somone stood with me in a black fleace with black shortish hair

Seem to be a lot of people bailing from that development currently, also none of our 158's has gone for fitment yet as far as I know. Thats about 6 months behind from the last blurb they gave us.

We dont go into the sidings! In & out on the fast's mostly, I think the chester rabble may go into that holding siding around the corner at picc.

When I was talking to the man in charge of signals (which is a mechanical engineer btw) he was not at all entusiastic about the ERTMS and it seems the're only going to get it when it's needed because either VT, NXEC, GC or somone says WE WANT 140 RUNNING AND THIS CAN DO IT, BUY IT IN NOW BECAUSE IT'S CHEAP!

I heard that in europe they have stopped using it on some lines, I have no idea if this is true as I dont follow railways abroad.......apart from Kenya.

Would be better if it was being designed by engineers rather than accountants, thats the main problem nowerdays with anything, bit like some of these new trains, they where designed by Alstom's crack team of accountants...

If it was built by engineers, it would work perfectly, but be very expensive!

Actually was very romantic, Albrighton looks like a station out of a 1930's film (think 39 steps or similar), foggy night, ambiant lighting etc etc. Besides her sadly deceased grandma met her husband on a railway station & she thought the world of her so it was special to my fiancee. At the end of the day it was a special place for both of us & I drive trains through there everyday...........whats the betting thats where I get my first fatality now? Just to ruin the place for us.

Yeah, looks romantic, unfortunaly for me and me other half, most of our romantic places are generaly where there are speed meetings or dogging areas, because the're all in the middle of nowhere

Ive always seen the station as a setting for a horror novel rather than full of romance. The amount of times I've almost had to fight my way out of the place thanks to the local chavs.

Cant fault you though mate. I prefer shifnal tbh, down by the end of the bridge, cos i don't have the A41 where i was almost killed right next to me.

As for jobs, I keep on looking on ATW, LM, VWC and AXC but none of them have anything for me at the moment, which is really annoying, as my manager on forcourt is turning into a bit of a five knuckle shuffler

And as for who I am, i've normally got army trousers on, with a hiking jacket, now a biking jacket, and if i have my bike, a hi-vis jacket. Normally from alb-sfn or tfc
