Engineering jobs

Hi I'm looking at moving into the rail industry in the maintenance and repair of rolling stock. I've a background in aircraft engineering. I did try searching however most threads seemed quite old and were locked.

I'm looking for jobs in the notts, lincs, south yorks area. I'm not quite sure what depots are in this area so far I've found Toton in notts. Are there many others in those areas?

What are the availabilities of jobs, are they few and far between? I've looked on job sites and on some of the companies I've found that work in this area (DB Schenker) however there seems to be few about. If anyone knows where best to look, it's be of great help.

Anyone who works in this side of the industry what is it like as a career?

You've got Eastcroft depot in Nottingham that do light maintenance of DMU's. Sadly you've just missed a huge recruitment drive from EMT, although they did have a smaller drive in April this year. Keep an eye out on their website eastmidlandstrains.co.uk but be wary that the jobs only advertise for short periods of time so check a few times a week.

As far as availability of jobs is concerned, you've just got to keep an eye on the websites and wait for stuff to be advertised. You sound like you're in my area wanting to work in Notts/ Lincs/ S Yorks, so all you can do is watch the EMT, Northern Rail, DB Schenker websites and wait for your opportunity to arise. If you are able to look a little further there is Etches Park and Bombardier in Derby.

Thanks very helpful, I'm not quite in a position to accept a job at the moment but it is nice to know that they are looking for people. I take it there is a lot of competition for the jobs? Yes I'm not a million miles from you

As there are no open vacancies, do you know what the wages are broadly? Looking at Northern's website they do have a good benefits package.
