I cannot believe that anyone would apply for a job not knowing what is involved, the Terms and conditions and the Salary? Was this not pointed out in the original ad for the job?

I doubt the job description will give too much info into the day to day tasks involved in the job and certainly won't list terms and conditions. It will also be a vague salary probably like with a few TOCs as training salaries differ from the final qualified salary.

So there really is no harm in applying for a job and then researching more about it like this poster has done is there...he is under no obligation to accept the job if offered and I would be surprised if much if what he is asking for in his post is actually included in the job description.

When I became a trainee driver with southern the job description didn't give any info at all of t&cs, only gave a training salary with no mention of the final rate and didn't give away much about the day to day tasks involved in the job.

I can't help answer theOPs question but your reply is far less than helpful!

An Engineering Driver is normally another name for a Maintenance Depot Driver. I don't know much about Old Oak Common though but they've got some top traction to work with. You won't be working entirely with mundane DMU's that's for sure!

I completely agree that job descriptions are normally less than helpful!

The original poster has done the best thing, ask on these forums and hope that someone from FGW answers it preferably before the Interview.

Hi Simon.

It might not be the same role as a maintenance depot driver but may well be similar. Have a look at some of Beveridges previous posts or maybe send him a PM for a job description of what he does (MDD for Northern).

There was a post knocking about with a very good description of the MDD role from him somewhere but I can't seem to find it amongst the threads that have descended into squabbling between members.

Sorry can't be more help.

None as it is better for your future career prospects to try to help your self first. Sorry to be blunt but an interviewer will be far more blunt than I am.

Um, how is asking a question on a forum not helping yourself? How else do you suggest he finds out about the job? Lets say you have to get a job in an industry you know nothing about. How would you go about finding out about pay, Ts&Cs, working environment etc?

Asking in forums is a pretty standard method of research for a job nowadays in any industry. And this isn't a job interview-it's preparation for one, a very different thing.

Your first post in this thread really wasn't any help and you are trying to put this person off asking questions and researching a job. Don't see the need for you to do that personally.

You've done the right thing by checking out/asking questions on this forum, I am now a depot train driver and came in from outside the industry. I knew virtually nothing about depot driving and am not a railway enthusiast, I put my successful application down largely to things I read here. The engineering driver post at Old Oak Common as I understand is going to be to do with the preparation of the depot for Crossrail, so driving engineering trains as the depot is converted & renewed. The salary whilst training would be roughly £23,000, after training which is around 5 months the salary would be roughly £33,000 plus an inner London allowance of £2235 per annum, you would only receive this allowance after your training period.

I can't find my own post with an MDD job description due to all the squabbling that has buried all the MDD threads, so I will write out a short version of it here tomorrow:
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
MDD roles include the following:
- Fuelling, Tanking (both emptying CET Tanks and filling toilet tanks up with water). Correct use of PPE at all times.
- Preperation of units entering service
- Driving units on and off the fuel pad, into and out of shed buildings, repositioning of units within shed buildings and fuel pads, marshalling and remarshalling unit formations in the yard, moving units into holding sdgs.
- moving demic units around which often requires isolating the brakes and other safety features.
- propelling, hauling, moving swingers and half units
- avoid conflcting moves. You need to know where every other MDD is, and where they are driving to/from, at all times, you need to know what order your unit needs to go down road x in relation to theirs, and put plans into place to ensure it happens.
- scotching units with isolated brakes after movement
- ground shunting. Pulling points, giving instructions on the ground for propelling moves, despatching trains from the yard that are entering service, dealing with depot arrivals that have come off the mainline including setting the appropriate road and handsignalling to the mainline driver,, manual uncouple
- DP duties on the fuel pad, involving settling up a safe system of work for fitters, fuellers, cleaners and MDDs.taking and removing posessions, safely guiding units in and out the shed buildings on foot, giving units under repair ready for movement, opening/closing maintenance shed power operated doors, removal of scotches, cables, battery chargers, etc. to enable safe movement of units.
- radio communication for just about everything
- splitting units and putting units back together again, including reconnecting jumper cables snd jubilee clips
- fault finding and rectification almost every time you deal with a unit. Fault finding on the fuel rig.
- coupling and uncoupling
- coolant refilling and engine oil
- toilet unblocking
- starting up engines to enable trains to be lit so cleaners can work on them
- frost duties on units and handpoints when required
- dealing with any out of course situation that may happen
- walking, and a hell of a lot of it! Expect to do as much milage on foot as you do driving! Full PTS skills required at all times. Its a hazardous environment with fork lift trucks, trains, dangerous substances and tripping hazards. Even "Walking" is safety critical.

That is only scratching the surface of what this excellent role is about.
