I would not say I was a "carrot". It's a legitimate natural progression. There are a lot of people who say that if you want be a mainline driver only go for the mainline trainee positions. These come up very rarely and have so many applicants the chances of success are minimal. Going in as an Engineering driver is a great way to get into the driving grade and will give you invaluable experience and as the advert says they consider it a stepping stone to mainline.

FGW have been recruiting mainline trainees in numbers, so sounds a little strange........ Nothing to lose by going along to the interview, but have some polite questions about this ready.

I believe a lot of the Paddington trainee vacancies have been pulled and then these engineering driver vacancies come up. That might suggest the guys on the depot have got the mainline vacancies. So maybe not so strange.

Think its just another name for a depot driver.

Or maybe shunter jobs in London aren't the easiest posts to fill, and this is a way of generating interest, amongst some half decent candidates?

Round my area it's the Depot Driving vacancies that are rare and Mainline vacancies come up all the time.

Understandably so, as there's probably about 20 times more mainline drivers than MDD's.

I think ANY job in London, let alone a railway job is fairly easy to fill, theres so many people after jobs in London its crazy.
