EMU Noisy compressors

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could recommend what type of EMU still in service has the loudest compressors and in what carriages is best to hear them?

I was of the belief that it was the 455's, but having travelled in the motor car of a 455/8 yesterday and a 317; I heard nothing on either. Are they not necessarily located underneath the motor coach? Also I have read on a previous thread that there is only one per unit, yet on a 315 for example I imagined there was one underneath both driving cars. I travelled on 315818 the other day and it was very loud at one end. If only every jouney on a 315 sounded like this!

Cl317 compressors are quite loud, even inside the train. It's under the driving trailer at the "A" end. For reference, this is the driving trailer next to the motor coach.

I remember the compressor on the 308's been loud.

Normals used to think they were the engine and when it stopped, thought the train had a problem.

You have to bear in mind that the noise will vary from one unit to another, with the more knackered ones being louder! 319's can be pretty noisy I seem to remember, though I don't know whether that's the compressor or something else down there.

I find the 313s to be the most noisiest EMUs on the GN, the other EMUs are fairly quiet by comparison.

321's are not the quietest they are located on the ATS coach.

I would say some of the 507's are very loud and are found in the DMS A coach.

Compressors on 455 (and probably) 317 are located in the driving cars. No room for the on the motor coach & they were taking off the NDTs on the 455s years ago.

The loudest compressors I've heard are on the A60/62 stock, the A62's having the louder ones. When sitting still at terminus or wherever and if you are sitting in one of the motor car, when a compressor starts up in a trailer car you'd feel your car vibrate with it!

Also quite funny when again at a terminus and people are walking up the train to board it, a compressor starts up and people think its an engine so rush on in a panic.

I'd say the 313s have the loudest compressors, followed by the 317s. The 317 compressors have a distinctive whirring sound to them when they start up sometimes, almost like the fans starting up on a 313. Only some of them do it and I've no idea what it is!

317s are certainly noisy and it's not even the fact that they're getting on a bit, as I distinctly remember their noises when they were new in the 1980s!

I sat in the coach at the other end of my 315 this morning (the Liverpool St end) and it was nice and loud, but not worth doing regularly as that end is so busy! Have found some great videos of 455's doing it on youtube, like this one at 1.01.....

A Stock were great, some of the tourists used to look terrified when theirs kicked in

The 315s and LU C-Stock are pretty damn loud. The old 1967 stock on the Victoria Line (RIP :cry often had a few cars with loud compressors.
