EMT - Trainee Train Driver - Stage 1 Assessment

I applied for the role of trainee driver for East Midlands trains and received an email from the hiring manager inviting me to Derby for the Stage 1 Assessment. Within the email I was sent study material to look at and to practice with.

Does anyone know exactly what will happen on the day and how many stages to this process there are?

I'm assuming an interview would be at the very last stages after assessments are fully completed.

I attended the session and took part in the 3 tests. I found 2 of them quite easy but I dont think I did too well on the gauges section. I'm hoping the other test scores will be enough to give me a pass to the next stages, we will find out the results (either a pass or fail) within 10 working days from East Midlands Trains.

When did you take the assessment? I was in on Tuesday.

I took mine yesterday in Derby at the Stuart Hotel, London Road.

Unfortunately I received an email saying I was unsuccessful at stage 1. But I am awaiting feedback from the OPC as to how I can improve and what areas I was good on. This is the end of my journey but I wish everyone luck and every success in the future.

Sorry to hear. Do you know what you failed on?

Personally I think it was the dials/gauges test as it confused me. When the OPC ring they will be able to tell me what I went wrong on hopefully. The email I received was just to inform me that I didn't make it through.

I received my feedback from the OPC today,

I passed 3 out of 4 tests;

Group Bourdon
TRP01 - GLOP instructions
TTAOCC - Listening to tones/Telephone Directory

Failed on TRP02 which is the dials & gauges

The OPC won't give you feedback on what score you had or what the benchmark test score was, just a fail or pass! I think it depends on the requirements the TOC set.

Thanks mate, just wait and see. I took mine today. I think I did okay on everything. However I only managed to answer 30 out of 43 on the speed dial test

I have my stage 1 assessment for Depot Driver with First SWT next week. Could anyone please tell me if the GLOP test is still used? Not looking for answers, just want to find out please. Also, the dial test sounds daunting, how did you all get on with it. I'm working hard practicing and looking for any helpful info, hints and tips I may have missed. Many thanks. Kalbo

Hi I had my test the other day. The Glop test was used. Was an A4 passage you had to read and then I was asked 24 questions I think. You have about 7 minutes to answer them.

The dial test was slightly different to any of the practice questions but the theory behind it is the same. However you have 8 minutes to answer 43 questions. I only managed 30. So I would practice on speed.

That's fantastic info Mark, many thanks. Any other advice on any of the tests would be really appreciated as I'm reading and researching and reading some more plus practising, struggling a little with the bourdon test as my brain wants to race ahead so making a few mistakes, would like to pull it back and aim for ten lines with no mistakes if that's acceptable....

....and of course the big question.....Did you pass??

30 is quite good! If you can get 25/30 with them all correct you should be fine, accuracy is just as important as speed.

Just need to keep practicing until my assessment day next Wednesday. I did find the dials on the practice sheet very straight forward but learnt that the test is much different. Bourdon Test worries me as does the tone count/directory search combo

I haven’t found out yet. Just keep practicing and you will be fine. None of them are hard you just have little time.
