EMT summer Skegness services

In the public timetables and this post the special HST services to Skegness:

07.53 Derby - Skegness
11.40 Skegness - Nottingham
13.50 Nottingham - Skegness
17.10 Skegness - Derby

...are advertised as running SO from 26th July. However, these trains are registered and are also advertised in publicity at stations to run on Saturdays between now and 26th July. Is it safe to assume then that these trains will actually run before 26th July?

43064/089 and NL03 working 0753 DBY-SKG this morning, so it looks like yet another error in the printed GBTT unfortunately.

According to TRUST there is no catering, but I think the buffet was open when I travelled on it last year (admittedly it was one of the Saturdays when it was diverted via Peterborough).

For future posters' reference the HST I was on did have a trolley service.

I didn't know this service was running until I saw it on this site. I think I will be using this service with friends at least once this summer. Does this service get busy. I will be travelling from Derby. And is it always an HST? If not them I won't be travelling. Thanks. Are there any other Holiday specials that run to places on the East Coast? I do like the coastline and i like to travel in relative comfort on trains that are not DMU's.

The four trains above run until 19th July. When I travelled on them, they weren't that busy at all.

From 26th July, these trains will be running, and I'd say they're more likely to be busier - especially the Derby - Skegness train.

So because they're not useful to you, they're pointless?

Try catching them - I think you'll find they're very well utilised.

What happens with the FC section, is it downgraded to Standard or do they charge a Weekend First upgrade? Thinking of doing this before the end of season.

It's declassified, and people do know about it - so expect a lot of folks to be in there if it's a nice day.

To be perfectly honest, neither set is particularly useful, but 4 journeys would be able to carry more passengers than 2 journeys.
I'm aware theyre well used, if not too well used, so an additional set of journeys would spread the passengers better, plus people going for the day would be able to catch the HST both ways, so sprinter services aren't as packed with day trippers.

I was on 1S03 on Saturday and it wasn't exactly full and standing. I'm not sure too many 'do know about it' otherwise I wouldn't have been the only person in a first class carriage for two hours.

To be honest, the 07:53 departure from Derby is very early for any day trippers and the other one, 13:50 from Nottingham is too late.

From my experience of the delights of Skeggy, a departure around 09:30, arriving there about mid-day would have been much more attractive.

We travelled on the EMT London to Scarborough Saturday service last year and joined at Derby. The first class was fully booked. Does the Derby to Skegness HST have catering facilities. It's a real pity that other operators Don't Saturday seaside specials with "proper" rolling stock. I am sure they would be popular. It just requires a bit of effort from the operators. I think that's asking a bit much these days. People don't want to travel like cattle at the inflated prices they pay.therefore they don't travel. I am sure many of us remember the lines of Saturday specials at places like Scarborough, Paignton, Newquay, Great Yarmouth etc etc.

Re: Scarborough, there's always the Spa or Flyer steam trains.

I got the impression that the HST was timed around when Butlins had a changeover during the Saturday.

I wouldn't know but I used it last summer. The Derby to Skegness working was lightly loaded, the return was heaving. why would people be leaving Skegness around 11am? Seems a bit late for daytrippers.

Well there is this event that is taking place on the Sunday 21st September with Butlins hosting 90s Reloaded. Other than that I don't know.

Not quite, just they run during such a short period that they are not entered into the timetable at the same time as the other journeys. Same as if the trains are running a Saturday service around Christmas, they will be entered as short term plans but it doesn't mean the trains might not run, but they aren't going to include it in the main timetable for a couple of days of usage.

We were planning to have a run to Skegness on July 26th from Derby. The 07.53 HST is running But according to realtimetrains the 17.10 HST return to derby is not running. Has anyone got any information about this. If the return HST doesn't run then we won't be going. Thanks

From 26 July - 6 September (peak school holiday weeks), operation is 1S01 0753 Derby - Skegness, then 1S02 1140 Skegness - Derby. This is to cater for the holiday trade - not day trippers.

The interim timetable has run for the first time this year and is aimed at both the holiday market (relatively small during the non peak weeks) supplemented by encouraging day trippers - hence the dual service. In the peak weeks, the holiday maker demand makes it necessary for the 1140 to go back to Derby.

So they actually knocked one train off then? If so thats crazy.I am really disappointed as I was looking forward to the day out. But I am not coming back on a sprinter. That would ruin my day.
