My comment didn't relate to football fans.

My apologies. I assumed that posting in a thread about football fans, in response to a post talking about football fans, meant you were commenting on football fans. How silly of me.

This is my worry.

One doubts whether it would have made any difference in this instance.
Quite right: the incident which inspired this thread (and which again was a tiny minority of those attending games that weekend) took place after the games, so those supporters will have had plenty of time to drink before re-entering railway property.

But don’t let that get in the way of a TOC being able to show how powerful they are by making more dry trains.

Considering the cost of alcoholic drinks from buffet counters and trolleys, I imagine when the police do enforce dry trains the TOCs aren't too pleased!
Some years ago, when Manchester United won the cup at Wembley, the special train bringing the TEAM back had been declared dry!

It took pragmatic policing to ensure the champagne flowed!

That seems very odd... why declare the train back to Manchester dry, when most MU fans would be travelling home via Paddington and Waterloo? <D

i suspect it is the old bill who ask for dry trains

This is a valid point in a lot of cases.
I’ve never seen the benefits of this on local services. I can sometimes understand it on the longer distance services so the routes in this topic could be considered eligible I suppose.

Ha Ha! I did say Team train, probably the only ones going back to Salford, to collect their Lambourginis and Ferraris! :D
