hi recently i was on a east midalndss trains sevice from peterborough to manchester and it was seriouly overcrowded by the time we had got to nottingham it was all full and people where standing (all the way to manchester) it did not help that the air con was faulty and it was broken so when i asked the guard to open the window he did not seem to know how to do it instead he opened up the 2nd mans seat at the back of the train, what i am wondering is, could i get a refund for that journey.
Thanks in Advance
Sam

Trains on that route are notoriously busy, even with 4 coaches. If you feel that strongly about complaining then do, but I doubt you would get a refund, the service still ran.

Technically no refund would be due, as you made the journey. However if you write to EMT explaining what happened there is a possibility of compensation being provided.

For more information about why the class 158 aircon is unreliable see Class 158 air-con

If you booked an advance purcase ticket which comes with a seat reservation then they may pay up as from personal experience they didn't honour the seat reservation that came with the ticket.

Do you mean the full Anytime fare with no Railcard discounts, or the appropriate walk-up fare?

The former used to be chargeable but it changed a year or two ago. If you can provide full details I can advise if you were overcharged.

Hi yorkie just looking at the tickets now... it seems that it is a anytime single with a f and f discount for the child (me) it is £11.65 and for the adult (my dad) it was £40.45
Thanks Sam:D

It's not just Liverpool to Norwich that could do with more cars. Newark to Grimsby becomes so overcrowded people get left behind, and it only runs every 2 hours with a single 153 Super Sprinter!

The Northern and Trans-Pennine consultation proposes transfering the Liverpool to Nottingham section of the Coast to Coast route to the next TransPennine express franchise. This will cut connections but may add 185s with 3 cars to part of the line.

On the Sheffield to London routes there has also been a spate of problems, with failed units leading to overcrowding. Peak trains which are usually two 5 car units joined together reduced to one crowded 5 car train. Anyone know what the root cause of their problems is? Poor maintenance?

Well in my experience of the trains between Sheffield and Loughborough there are overcrowding issues there too, even off peak you'd be hard pushed to find suitable (i.e. not reserved) seats together.

It's not the South East or Scotland so unfortunately has to make do with less trains than is needed, although personally I don't even see it as the route within EMT that needs longer trains the most.

It is a busy route, with quite a lot of passengers travelling end to end on the train, it is a service I would dearly love to see improved as it could be so much better than it currently is. My ideal would be a six or seven car set potentially with a buffet car, to increase the number of bay seating, luggage space, bike spaces and to provide first class. It has the potential there to be a premier cross country route, it just needs the chance. Sadly I don't think this will ever happen and all that is likely is it will get chopped in half and will be "improved" with 185s because they're modern, so therefore must be better than the 158s they'll be replacing.

I'd still like to see the 222s on there when the MML is electrified, but really can't think of any available extra stock before then, which wouldn't be better used elsewhere, as things stand.

No objection to that personally, it is still something talked about, I believe if it did happen it would be on a NOT-LIV-NOT-LIV circuit at peak times only. It was one idea for when the Corby service started, to operate that with 158s and utilise 222/1s on selected Liverpool runs. Preferably remove a car from the 7 car sets to create a number of 6 car sets so that all services could be operated at full length with just one coach of first class. You'd need about 11 sets for the full route based on the present service, though I'd certainly love to see two later services operating from Norwich.

The long term plan (based on what the TPE consultation said and what platforms Network Rail plan to lengthen) seems to be for a 6 car 185 service between Liverpool and Nottingham once North TPE switches to electric services. That may in turn mean more 4 car 158s operating between Peterborough and Nottingham.

On the general subject of this route, having responded to a call for participants, earlier this week I joined a small (< 30) group of regular East Midlands Trains passengers who will form a longer term consultation group called Customer Voice. The plan is to meet managers twice a year, complete regular surveys on the service we experience and to feedback on issues affecting EMT service or prospective plans for the future.

Without going into detail, the Norwich - Liverpool route was mentioned. It has experienced tremendous growth in the last few years. This is probably in part because it is now much more reliable and dependable under EMT than it was under CT... despite the problems discussed above, in general the splitting / joining at Nottingham is effective at making use of what limited capacity is available to EMT.

It is my understanding that the proposal in the DfT consultation to split it came as a complete surprise to EMT; they had no forewarning of the proposal and made representations against the proposal during the consultation process. I understand that they also lobbied local politicians to do the same.

EMT's franchise does currently come to an end 1 year before the proposed split would happen. Were EMT in talks with DfT over a Direct Award before the consultation was published?

Sometimes NRE shows 'the train has been delayed due to passengers' Without having to stop to pick up and set down passengers the train would have been on time.

I believe it did, its a route that EMT have worked hard to improve and given the resources available have done pretty well. Its a route I enjoy working and I guess I'm a little bit proud of it as well, I certainly have no wish to lose it, but I wouldn't consider for a single second willingly transferring to TPE. I like my local routes far too much for that.
