East Midland Trains have now activated the ITSO pads and menus on
their ticket machines at St Pancras. I did try my ITSO cards, but they
eventually returned an error message of "not personalised". The ITSO
pads on the machines take much longer to respond than Oystercard pads,
which I can see being the source of problems in the future.

The readers (fitted by CUBIC) can take up to 20 seconds. Merseyrail testing on the ATGs showed that a trial ITSO card used was a simple tap and open jobby.

Depends on what sort of tables are uploaded to the barriers. A level of checking that goes into specific detail will take slightly longer as there is more to check, (i.e. railcards loaded, time restrictions, blacklists, passenger status etc).

Although ITSO is a standard, each ITSO card has a unique numerical ID which needs to be added to a Central database held by the TOC, (i.e. so it can be tracked, and so it can be blacklisted if need be). Most TOCs won't do this as it varies the quality of card knocking about.
