Just a quick question because it has probably been mentioned befoire.

I am aware MML ordered 9-car meridians for a new service which wasn't then given the go-ahead by the SRA. These are now 7-car trains operating for EMT

Question is now they are used on ordinary EMT services did they displace HSTs and how many?

What? Meridians are used on the Sheffield fasts, not HSTs. HSTs are used on the Nottingham "fasts" (which call at East Midlands Parkway and Market Harborough)

Interesting so no vast quantity of MML HSTs were stepped down when the longer meridians were put in to service?

No I was referring to the post by asylumxl. As far as I know there was no vast stepping down of HSTs, there are a good few spare most days though.

There is always at minimum 3 EMT HST sets sitting at Cricklewood during the peak time.

And a load at Neville Hill/Derby. Its good that one went to EC. Can't the DfT make EMT lease on to XC? (for free )

The 222s haven't been in formations like that for a long time (and I don't think they were ever in 10 car formations) they started rearranging them in 2006 and made more changes in 2008 (at least I think those are the years), currently they are in 7/5/4 car formations whilst the HSTs are indeed in 2+8 formation.

The MML "Meridian" sets were originally 9/4 coaches and have all been reformed to 7/5 coaches. The ex-Hull Trains "Pioneer" sets have always been 4 coaches.

Some services are run as 10 coaches by doubling up 5 coach units.

HSTs run the fast Nottinghams and some Leeds services. 7 coach Meridians run fast Sheffields and the remainder of the Leeds services. Most other services are 4/5 coach Meridians.

Can't the DfT make EMT lease on to XC? (for free )

Can't the DFT arrange for 137 additional Meridian carriages to make all existing ones seven coaches and thirteen additional units to be built to replace *all* EMT HSTs? EMT get a unified fleet of "inter city" trains, XC get a load of HSTs (allowing doubling up of existing Voyagers) etc etc

They could, but that costs ££££££. A fleet of 40 identical length Meridians, especially if the much discussed pantograph coach (capable of raising and lowering on the move- perhaps as an eighth coach?) was included in each set, would be a good fleet for the MML.

But then longer Voyagers would be good too- say eight cars for them all, with those pantograph coaches and SDO? Would be plenty of capacity for almost all sevices- admittedly, too much on many, but that's hardly a huge problem. More units available too- no doubles. Again £££££

So, 137 additional Diesel 222 centre coaches plus 13 seven-car diesel units
92 Class 221 Diesel centre coaches
102 Class 222 Diesel Centre coaches

makes for 422 Class 22x diesel coaches

plus, to add pantograph coaches to the lot, 118 coaches.

So, you want to make that order for 540 new coaches? Would transform the MML, XC and WC fleets. The (18?) HSTs freed would be handy on the East Coast and GWML.

Sounds like EMT have some spare. Perhaps EMT want them to go for they have only recieved a minor refresh and it was commented they were running out of time. Perhaps Stagecoach would rather they go like the class 442 at SWT did.

Of course this is not easy if the line may be electrified

There are currently none spare at Derby while the Meridian refresh is on.

There is usually one set on exam at Neville Hill and the rest are out in service (including the one on hire to East Coast)

Some services run as 9 cars in a 4+5 formation. The 06.47 Sheffield - St. Pancras is one IIRC.

Love the EMT HST's, always good to hear the scream when they leave St Pancras. Miss that with the East Coast and Grand Central HST sets.
