I was just on the EMT website buying an advance ticket from London to Sheffield to travel in a few weeks' time (on a Saturday).

The ticket was £16.50 (with Railcard discount) and after choosing the ticket, I was offered an upgrade to First for £2 - what a deal!

Does anyone know any details about this offer? I've bought many tickets through EMT's site before, so is it for "loyal" customers, or just to get people to try First and buy Weekend First in the future?

I suspect you were just 'upgraded' to a First Advance. EMT are really trying to push first class at the moment and one of the ways they are doing it is by advising customers on their ticket booking website how much extra it would cost to get a first rather than standard ticket.

That's new. It's not unusual for advance first on EMT to only be a quid or two more which I take advantage of from time to time (I rarely travel anything other than 1st with them as it's slower than my normal route and 2nd doesn't usually save me enough to be worth it). It is unusal for them to point it out.

Or a cup of hot water, a stick of coffee or tea granules, a stick of UHT Milk and a stirrer for your own DIY hot drink.

On the EMT website where abouts is the upgrade option. Does it just appear on First advanced single

I'd rather keep my £2 and buy a decent coffee. At least with EC you get quite good coffee and in a proper cup, served at your seat.

Even if you travel First at weekends on EMT, you get a smaller cup of tea or coffee than they give out to paying customers in Standard, and since it's one trolley per train you're only likely to get it once per journey.

Sometimes the trolley doesn't even serve First Class, and you have to take your ticket and go and find it. It isn't worth the effort. Buy before you board or wait until the end of your journey, it'll be a much better coffee than RailGourmet could dream of producing.

Occasionally, on some Virgin Trains journeys, the cost of a First Class Advance ticket is cheaper than the Standard Advance equivalent (!) (Same train, same journey!)

Go figure!

All due to demand, just means that more people have been buying standard class advances than firsts. Quite good when you spot that it is cheaper but I bet a lot of people don't even look.

Yes, that can happen on EMT too - I wonder if they'll bother mentioning that if you try and buy a standard ticket! You can upgrade for just minus £2!

The NRE website always shows the cheapest fare for a given journey, which is sometimes a First Advance if cheaper than an offpeak single, etc
