EMT Destination Blinds always broken

For a while now I have noticed that most of the EMT class 156 units seem to have the Destination Blinds on White, Blue or Yellow blanks. I know when the units went through refurb at Neville Hill they were fitted with a new winding mechanism which was attached to the original one, is it this is causing problems or making it very hard to wind???

I have seen a picture of 156470 on flickr at Doncaster which the Destination blind says "East Midlands Trains Destination No1" here is the picture:

I fail to see why EMT wanted to fit a new mechanism to their fleet when the indicator boxes worked perfectly fine and no other company have added extra bits on - apart from maybe making the handles longer to make it easier for the shorter members of the train crew (I don't mean that in an awful way I just couldn't think of the politically correct term, so I do apologise in advance if anyone finds the word short offensive).

At some point in the next few years, those same 156s will need more work doing in order to meet accessibility legislation. I believe this will include digital destination displays (including extra ones on the sides) and internal PIS, so I imagine all this will be done at the same time- the current solution was probably only intended as a stop-gap (though not an entirely successful one according to your observations!).
