EMT December 2008 timetable

Just a note that a HST was on a London-Sheffield run today - the 0855 from London. It was 4 minutes down at Chesterfield.
Also today I noticed 222002 accelerated away VERY SLOWLY even though 6 out of 7 (anyone know why is coach C on 7 car and coach B on 5 car nearly always have their engines not working - or have they been removed) engines were working. It also had about 5 wheel flats.

Probably just a fleet-wide measure to cut down on fuel, as extra engines don't actually add anything power wise.

XCT SuperVoyagers to my knowledge always run with the engine under FC or the Quiet Zone (which ever is at the rear) off these days, which I presume is for fuel consumption help.

Quite different to what I have seen in the past couple of months. Most XC Voyagers have all engines running. They didn't until recently though.
All DMUs should have engine management systems - TPX style so that only all engines run when accelerating and then some can idle whilst others run to keep speed. It annoys me to see all the wasteage of fuel on the railway with trains left running for 20 minutes plus when not even in use!

The 0708 LCN-STP was a 5-car Meridian on Tuesday and unsurprisingly it was overcrowded, in spite of which I found a seat anyway. I hope it was merely shortformed and not a new permanent formation.

It joins another 5 car Meridian at somewhere like Derby and Leicester to form a 10 car train from there, although the train isn't unlocked until further down the line to give capacity for passengers joining at stations far Up.

Yes, but on that day it was shortformed all the way to London (i.e. there was no second unit at all).

An HST is currently working the 1F25 10:55 St. Pancras - Sheffield service vice Meridian. (ta 43021 from HST Forum). Bang on time out of Derby for anyone who think HSTs can't keep to the new timings.

There appears to be one diagram a day that is running as a HST instead of a Meridian. I notice that it should be a 5 car Meridian too. What is happening with the reliablity of the Meridians! It appears to have gone way down, unless one is currently have the first class changes made.

It was never way up!

On Monday the 1630 STP-NOT was a 5-car Meridian - again I wonder if it was merely shortformed or not. Thankfully on Tuesday the 0708 LCN-STP was back in 10-car formation (and the 1830 STP-LCN was also in 10-car formation as expected); the 1855 STP-SHF was a HST.

1227 Sheffield-London was a HST today. One diagram a day seems to be substituted and it is very random which one it is.
The reason is that 222001 and 222003 both appear to be out of service.

You would think, therefore, that EMT would be trying to get 222101 into service ASAP!

Yes good point! I never actually thought of that. Perhaps a re-numbering of 222101 - 222104 to 222124 - 221127 would be a good idea.

I suspect EMT will want them in service ASAP as when the HST refurbishment starts soon there may not be a spare for cover! They also want to start the Meridian first class refurbishment soon which will be another reason to get them in service, not forgetting the start Corby services too! The EMT Mainline fleet is going to be under great strain soon.

Phew, that sounds like quite a strain in the short term!

I suppose we should be glad that EMT are tackling things like this straight away, and hopefully they'll then have a refurbished modern looking fleet that won't need much attention in the medium term.

I just wish we'd had this level of attention in the past...
