Do EMT have to reverse at Leicester to run to Corby ?

No, just turn off after Kettering.

EMT seem to making a complete mess out of what was a good TT. Luton and Bedford might as well not be on the EMT map now , just complete farce everywhere, for only 5 bloody minuets!

They have also lost of load of the paths they wanted too. They seemed to be under the impression the freights would move for them, but seeing as they had firm contractural rights for their paths, we rejected EMTs bids...

The MML is hardly freight central on the Southern half of the MML though.

Do many people join EMT services at Luton and Bedford ? They are served by First Connect aren't they so i thought they would be picking up most of the passengers.

I've only been down the Midland mainline once from Sheffiled - London so i'm not really familier with it. I think we only got stopped Chesterfield, Derby, Leicester then London. It was quite quick actually. Might have a trip down again soon.

You are assuming that people are going to London. But Luton has an airport an Uni, both of which maybe used by people from South / East Midlands. Now, thanks to EMT, they have to go to St Pancras and change to FCC, thus adding a fair chunk of time and distance to their journey.

Really this timetable does the same plan as VHF, all about speed and less stops. Those living approx 60 miles North of London will have a very difficult time travelling to places up North.

Yes, many people do. But FCC don't go north of Bedford on the Midland Mainline.

It'd be good if you had specific stopping patterns which were generally the same all day:

London, Luton Airport, Luton, Bedford, Wellingbrough, Kettering, Corby

London, Luton or Luton Airport, Bedford, Wellingbrough, Kettering, Market Haghbrough, Leicester, Loughbrough, Long Eaton, Derby

London, Leicester, Nottingham

London, Leicester, Derby, Chesterfield, (Limited stop Dronfield), Sheffield, (Doncaster, Wakefield Westgate, Leeds, York, Scarbrough)

London, Luton, Bedford, Leicester, Loughbrough, Nottingham, Carlton, Lowdham, Newark Castle, Lincoln

You all seem to be under the impression that trains will not call at Luton or Bedford regularly for service north of Kettering, when infact there will be one per hour to Nottingham, with connections easily available at Leicester for stations to Derby and Sheffield.

Go back to 1997 and have a look at the earliest MML timetables and you'll see how much the service has improved since then.

It's the changing that we take exception to and would quite possibly put off potential travellers with luggage too.

Just because the service is better than it was doesn't mean it can't be better.

I've never understood why people moan about changing trains; surely getting off one train, waiting (say) 10 minutes and boarding another can't be that bad? Sure, some people have luggage but for the most part, that involves lifting it off one train and placing it on another and, if you can't carry them, most major stations have trolleys.

Yes, but its that going down to every 60 mins which has got peoples backs up. And given most of the stoppers are pretty wedged south of Leicester the chances of getting a seat say Leicester-Bedford will decline dramatically with a 50% service reduction and just a single (?) car increase in train length*

* 5-car 222 rather than 4?

Why should we change trains when there was a Direct train to Sheffield from Luton/LAA/Bedford, now we have to change twice or go down to St Pancras which is more expensive.

Also people with luggage from Luton Airport wont want to be lugging their suitcases all over the place, plus this takes time and more often than not, blocks the vestibules when they getting off.

Again, why should we have to change twice when we had a direct train?

Why should I have to change when we used to have a direct service to Hamilton? Why should I have to change when we used to have a direct service to Edinburgh via Bathgate? Why should I have to change to go to London when a direct service used to be available? Why should I have to change to go to Milngavie when a train can easily go that way?

You may not notice it, but you're not the only people in the world who have to change trains where a direct train could run or used to run in the past. Southerners ;)

You must understand that people will be annoyed when a direct train will be taken away from them. What do you expect them to be? Happy?

No one likes to change more than they have to.

Tell me about it; the frequent trains to Hamilton were withdrawn before I started school in, guess where, Hamilton. What did I do? I found a way to Hamilton. Yes, it was annoying that the direct link used to be there and, in fact, the trains were no longer my best option. In fact, it forced me onto the expensive school bus.

And all the above examples I gave directly effect myself or a member of my family. What did we do? Found a way around it. I suggest you do the same.

Just because you've lost your direct services doesn't make it any more acceptable for Luton/Bedford losing their direct services. All that's required is one northbound and one southbound stop to be honest.

Doesn't stop us being angry about having to change two times when once was all that was needed. Of course we will find ways round it, which of course by changing trains!

I agree, just cos you have to (me123) doesn't mean we have to.

Fuss over nothing. It's hardly as if everything stopped at Luton or whatever. Indeed, for trains to Sheffield and the north of Derby the stopping pattern was daft (least it was when I last went to Luton) anyway.

We didn't make this much fuss when they withdrew the direct North West to South West trains from us down here on the Marches. So many times that service would have been extremely useful, especially these days, but no...

I live in Derby. I will no longer get a direct service to Luton, saying that I have never needed to get off at anywhere on the MML apart from Leicester and St. Pancras. I really don't mind changing at Leicester if I needed to though it's hardly the most complicated change in the world....

Change at Leicester, you won't need to change twice or continue to London ;)

I have to change at Luton, Luton Airport Parkway or Bedford to go to Sheffield anyway. Now I will have to change at Leicester.

2 changes when 1 change was had.

Ah well. I'm personally looking forward to a slightly shorter journey to Sheffield, and so to York. :D
