Looking at the EMT timetable, I'm wondering why certain Services spend an extrordinary amount of time standing at Kettering.

eg:
The 1635 from Derby M-F arrives Kettering 1801 and stands 26 mins before proceeding to London.
The 1857 from Corby M-F arrives Kettering 1906 and stands 21 mins " " "
The 1943 from Corby M-F arrives Kettering 1952 and stands 35 mins " " "
The 2043 from Corby M-F arrives Kettering 2053 and stands 25 mins " " "

A similar situation applies with the corresponding Saturday services and the last train Saturday evening, the 2128 from Nottingham arrives Kettering 2217 and stands 15 mins before proceeding to London.

Does anyone know why this happens?

For anyone unaware the 16:35 runs via Melton and Colby and NOT via Leicester.

The 1635 ex Derby waits time at Kettering to allow a) an Up train to pass Kettering and run south ahead of it and b) a Down service to split with one half going to Sheffield and the other to Corby.

In fact, I'd wager that some/if not all of those services leave Corby early to allow another service to run onto the branch, and then kill time at Kettering to pick up their usual path. I don't have a TT to hand to check though.

Indeed, the single line from Corby is rather a bottleneck (that, and the long Manton - Corby section, does nothing to simplify regulating decisions between Melton and Manton!), so it'll often be necessary to leave Corby earlier to either allow the next Down train onto the branch, or possibly to accommodate one of the various freight paths. Does the arrival time at Kettering permit a decent connection into a faster Up train?

It's worth noting that, in the WTT at least, a lot of the evening trains are booked to shunt clear of the single line at Corby, for the same reason. It's often not necessary in practice though, in which case the train will just sit in the platform.

What suprised me last Friday whilst travelling between Melton Mowbray & Kettering on the afformentioned 16.35 ex-Derby train was how well used it is. Seems several cheap EMT/Megatrain tickets are booked on this train & therefore remained onboard rather than transfer for an earlier arrival into St.Pancras.

The 1635 ex Derby stops to allow the 1635 ex Sheffield to pass which then runs non-stop to St. P. It also allows the 1728 ex Nottingham, non-stop through Kettering, to pass.

It would be good if they let the 1635 ex Derby trundle along the Wymington diversion to be passed by these 2 (or at least the Nott service) then it would make 3 PSUL moves on 1 service and do Wymington at a reasonable hour! We can but dream.

Does anyone know why the 2128 SO Nottingham - London has to stand 15 mins at Kettering?

To allow for engineering works further south, I note that this weekend it runs slow line all the way to London from Harrowden Junction (North of Wellingborough), and there is a service which it has to wait to clear the single line before it can continue, so I can only imagine it is to avoid it waiting between stations for an extended period of time.

Not possible unfortunately as EMT have a timetable commitment to run a half hourly service between Kettering and London.

Would my Leicester to Kettering ticket be valid via Loughborough if I wanted to travel on the 1635 and go around Syston North to East curve?
TIA

Cheers qwerty, I never thought to check that out, I guess going to East Mids Parkway on a Leicester- Kettering ticket is pushing things a little too far. :)

I don't think the 0800 from Leicester is what I would call "unreasonable" hour.

Trains are also regularly diverted that way on Sunday mornings.

It's not that reasonable if you don't live in Leicester.

Might drag myself out of bed and head to Wellingborough/Kettering to do it though.
