Not released advance tickets for April 13th yet, despite it being just over 8 weeks away, I thought advance were supposed to go on sale 12 weeks before hand.

It's possible that they're waiting for Network Rail to finalise the timetable that day for engineering works. Theoretically they are supposed to go on sale 12 weeks in advance as this is when NR is supposed to confirm what the timetable will be for engineering works but on occasion there is a delay in when this is done. I would keep an eye on them as they'll almost certainly be on sale in the near future.

Weekday Advances generally come out twelve weeks ahead, though this can vary a bit, weekend Advances can come out later because of engineering works. The train companies shouldn't put tickets on sale before they know what trains they are running.

Why do they sell normal walk on tickets for the normal services on the day that I want the advance for then? Stupid.

Because they are not tied to a specific train.

EMT are often very late releasing Advance Tickets for Weekends and Bank Holidays although I have noticed a big improvement during the last 2 years. It was a problem right back in the days of Midland Mainline.
Quite often when I have travelled down to London from Nottingham for a weekend I have travelled down on Friday evening with an EMT AP ticket but come back Sunday afternoon from Kings Cross via Grantham with an East Coast and Connections AP ticket.
If cheap East Coast Advance tickets are available I get them straight away while they are available becuase sometimes by the time EMT do release them they are hard to get and very expensive and by then the East Coast tickets have all been sold.

I'm only going to Barnsley so it would be easier to go on EMT via Sheffield than EC via Doncaster and Meadowhall or Wakefield.
