Same here, lol. I went with standard First Class Large on Wednesday morning. (Definitely did not want to fold the form up, as I'd been advised that doing that can seriously damage your chances of success.)

Was it possible to email your application form to EMT?? Would be saved a load of hassle with the post. Most companies app forms should allow you to fill in forms by computer and send them by email. Pen, paper and post is very old fashioned and out dated.

The application form itself gave a postal address to post it to.
Although East Midland Trains' career page hinted that you could email it to them, the .pdf form was not editable on a computer. (EDIT: Well okay then, I just managed to edit a copy of the form by manually putting in text boxes, but that could just look scruffy, lol.)
See the 'Contact Us' section on their careers page, and you'll see what I mean.

Nah it's alright! I'm sure EMT will have all of our forms clogging up their offices ready for marking.
It feels better somehow to physically write it though, although my hands felt like cramping at the end, lol.

Bummer, sorry to hear that :cry: Just checked the Post Orifice online and my application has was signed for on Thursday morning. It's all down to EMT from here onwards.

I posted it a few days ago - i used a normal large stamp - I had to go to the post ofice as i dont stock large first or second class stamps!

I wouldn't say 'ONLY'. There's bound to be more opportunities soon. If I'm not mistaken, I hear Northern are going to recruit for some Trainee Train Drivers later this very year, and who's to say East Midlands Trains won't either?
You could use the waiting time to gain some extra experience and potentially make your application even better for next time.
Also, ensure that your application is posted at least two clear days before the closing date with First Class or First Class Recorded postage. (Definitely not Second Class!)

Hi, i sympathize with you Stu,
Off topic a bit,...but i had a run in with the post office, i applied for a job (railway) and the interview letter turned up after the interview date had passed.
No matter how much i begged the TOC the vacancy was now filled.
It turned out that my letter was delivered to a neighbour who was on holiday for 2 weeks. I tried to get the post office to contact the TOC but they denied everything. So i used to collect my mail from the post office by hand by what we had agreed and then somedays they would deliver it to my house.
I have no faith in the post!!!

This is why I can't understand why all companies don't do away with paper & post entirely and use emails for everything.

The reason I never folded mine is that I am aware of employers who immediately bin folded applications upon receipt. I actually only just discovered that myself recently, thankfully.
One site I looked at just now suggested you may get away with one neat fold, so it may get overlooked, but it's definitely better to be safe than sorry for future reference.
Luckily, we won't have to wait too long before we find out where all our applications sit.
The lesson I've learned myself is to go for recorded delivery next time, so I can actually find out if they got my form. I don't plan on contacting EMT as I don't want to put pressure on them and appear 'disorganized.' lol
Hopefully, it'll work out well for all of us.

Yes Sir, I emailed my application in because I only saw the application late so I printed it out, filled it out then scanned it in and sent it via email because funny enough I currently work for Royal Mail so ironically I didnt think it was worth me sending it via post.
So, yes email received was an automated one, dont get worried yet.

Many years ago (on leaving secondary education!!) I applied for a job with British Gas as a trainee Service Engineer, and when I was rejected at the first sift I sought feedback from them. They said it was due to the "quality of your application". Nowadays I send prospective employers the application form, my CV and a covering letter explaining who I am and why I'm sending them an envelope full of guff, all by recorded post. Plus I print onto heavier 250gsm paper because it feels better in hand. This all may prove to be useless, and it is when completing an online application, but its what I did to give a good first impression to my current employer. LB

When I used to sift applications, it was much easier to read a printed version than on screen. I could highlight relevant information as well as glaring errors, gaps in information or areas to probe. This may or may not be the case on the railway...

Sorry to hear that. But there will be other chances I'm sure. Anyway isn't truck driving quite well paid ? I'm a coach driver and I'm sure it's better paid than that.

My TOC Northern accepts online applications and HR prints them out before sending them to the relevant manager to be read.
A printed version certainly is easier to read than on screen. Much lower risk of eye strain, headache, irritation, eye injuries and all the other problems associated with working on computers for long periods of time.
But sending an application online is by far the best system from the reasons already discussed. Plus an application form that has been typed looks a lot neater and more professional than hand writing. Some peoples hand writing is also very difficult to read, and it makes the sifters job easier when it is typed.

I haven't heard anything just yet. I'd imagine it won't be too long now though.
Wish it was. Im an agency driver - my wages can vairey.
Some firms are paying there full time drivers average £7.50 - £8.00 an hour.

I don't think we'll hear anything over the weekend to be honest but they are leaving it a little late, aren't they? Considering they'll be running interviews from the 25th...
