All gone quiet. Anyone heard anything new?

At my final stage they said there would be another lot of stage 1 testing going on in a few weeks, not sure if it ever did. I'm in the talent pool so pretty much just waiting to hear from EMR if/when something comes up.

Had my interview for a qualified position at the end of March, and heard back the next day. I was watching the thread hoping that once the trainee recruitment process was complete things might pick up a bit of pace. I know these things always take a while though, so as you say, sit and wait.

I presume qualified drivers will hear prior to trainees.

I've not heard a thing since the woop woop lol.

With the new brief that's been released I'm hoping it all still goes ahead to be honest.

I don't know; it's a longer training process for trainees, so they might need you in first.

Had an email, I expect all those successful received the same; recruitment on hold for six months, more to follow at the end of the year.

Hello. I am not english native speaker and I have been trying to become train driver mainly, but if my application is not successful at the beginning it would be ok to become a train conductor anywhere in UK or even working in any train station even as a cleaner. The weird thing is thar I have been applying for these kind of positions since 1 year now, not only in east midland trains but also in GrandCentral, Northern, GTR, Lner and so on. I have applied to more than 5 differents railways Uk companies when an opportunities come up on their website, and ALL have been ALWAYS unsuccessul and ALL where not successful in the first screening stage which was deciding if my CV was ok for me or not! Now, I have designed my CV exactly based on what the recruiters want to become a trainee train driver and train conductor in particular, but no, nothing ! The curriculum are designed not by me but my professionist, and they are definitely right! So, at the end, since march 2020 I have applied around 15 trainee train driver positions and around 20 for train conductor. ALL OF THEM WHERE UNSUCCESSFUL EVEN TO THE FIRST STAGE OF THE CV. I am really start to think that 1) or the recruitment team is crazy and want to hire ONLY UK people 2) or everyone that want to work in this industry must know someone to work there, especially for trainee train driver, and this would be in both cases really ridiculous!!! We are talking about a job that, after training, is definitely possible to do it! I HATE discriminations when get people stuck on not to give to them NEVER an opportunity, like in this case, NEVER to be successful in ANY trainee train driver applications, train conductor and similar. If someone in this forum can reply me and explain me this situation it would be great. Thanks.

In a lot of cases the applications are apparently checked by computers and rejected before humans even look at them. The scan through for certain words and phrases apparently.

It could always be the case that your previous experience isn't what they're looking for, plus it's a very competitive application process as it is with 1000s of applications per vacancy and a very difficult position to get into.

Hey Train Driver 99! I can 100% assure you there's no discrimination in the recruitment process. It took me 7 attempts to become a Conductor, and I never understood why. At the time I was already working in the industry too. This was my 4th attempt at a drivers role and fortunately I was successful and I'm in the talent pool.

I had some amazing people through the stages I went too from all walks of life, not everyone was a railway employee already.

The big thing I'll say on your CV is tailor it to each TOC, and give the best examples you can possibly think of. The industry is very heavily safety focused and customer service. If you you're applying always remember Safety, Customer Service then Revenue.

It took me 2 days to fill out my application. I really thought about what I put and why. Firing so many applications off at one go isn't great, as you want to know why you want to work for that specific company, and they want to know you're committed to them.

After each rejection I always re-read my application. Sometimes I'd have made a spelling mistake and even that is enough for rejection (it shows you might rush and miss something). Take your time when applying, and don't just apply everywhere...

It really could be anything with them not being obligated to give feedback. It could be: where you love, your age, your education (as long as you can speak and write English clearly which I can see you can), distance from depots, time since last rejected, or even you didn't even make the sift in the first place...

I always say, rejection makes you more determined. When you do get it you'll appreciate it so much more :)

Hello and thanks. So what's the key for recruitment tean to choose the right ones? English people first, knowing someone in the industry second and third the CV ? Because the key to be successful is basically know what EXACTLY recruiters want!

Definitely not English people first, of course you need the right to work in the UK but definitely not UK people before anyone else. I know plenty of people on the railway who are not native to the UK... My girlfriend is one!

Knowing someone in the industry counts for nothing if you can't pass the computer scan mentioned above.

You need to know what's expected of you in the role. What life experience you've had and how you can apply it to the job. Unfortunately if you've say not got any customer service experience or safety related work, then your chances you passing the first stage are very very slim with how competitive this industry is.

Thanks really for your comprehensive response. My english is actually advance, based on my international certificate to demonstrate my level of english. The fact that you say that it is not required to be native speaker to be train driver or train conductor in Uk is great. For aircraft pilot it is actually required, for ryanair and easyjet for example, not to have a native english speaker. So my level of english it looks like is ok to work in Uk as a train driver or train conductor as you said. Regarding my previous experiences, I have actually got more than 4 years experiences in customer service mainly in shops as well as delivery driver, which is my current job . All of these jobs where and are done in Uk as I have been living in Uk since 2016. I have got the right to work in Uk as I have the permanent certificate to remain. I have also got a undergraduate in communication and a master degree in marketing. The CV has been specifically designed without making any mistakes anywhere as I have left it done to professionist paying around 200 pounds, and they are one of the best agency to prepare CV in Uk. If all of these are not enough, then the recruitment team might hire aliens... As a said we are talking about a job like everyone which is not fo become CEO of a multinational company or even to become prime minister of UK... it is simply train driver or train conductor... I wouldn't believe that I am so below many applicants based on my CV I have described in general..

The experience you have is one thing, but translating the experience into how it suits the roll of train driver in the application is another thing.

You need to explain how your experiences mean you are good with communication, solving problems, working under pressure, health and safety, concentration, etc etc.

There are countless topics on this forum regarding this, this thread is not the best place to discuss it!

There are so many threads on this forum about perfecting CVs and what to write in your application, you just have to search for it.

This thread is not the place to be looking for tips, it's about a specific vacancy and is drifting way off topic. Use the forum search and you will find exactly what you're looking for!

There are plenty of non British born people driving train's and you are not at a disadvantage . Just to let you know that train driving is a very popular career and moreso since covid cost some people their career's. For example a lot of ex airline pilots apply. When a train operating company recruits , they will get several thousand applications and even tens of thousands. You will be up against a lot of strong applicants. You need to be patient and keep trying.

You posted earlier than you have applied for multiple TOCs - most driver vacancies have a 60 minute max commute so you might be instantly denied for that reason. You state Liverpool so there are a few various TOCs you can apply for but it may be a reason.

Whilst not a criticism, it is notable that you are not a native English speaker. If positions are very competitive - which they are - then even minor mistakes in grammar, tense or spelling might be picked up at an early stage in the sifting stage and reject you. As many have said the positions are HIGHLY competitive, and the vast majority will not be successful. Sadly that is the way it goes. Take on board the comments and try again when the next vacancy comes.

Hello and thanks for your email. If you need to be native speaker or being perfect in English, then it would be simply a job as a train driver but a job as a writer ! Come on guys we are talking about a job through which you need to know a specific communication, which is called "english for work"! Once you learn what specific language you have to use it during your daily routine then it is done! Graduate Engineers does not need to be native speaker to work in UK , but only fluent english, like me. And that job is as important as for the role as a train driver. I will definitely try next time, but I need to start finding alternatives ways to get into a train company becauseit looks like that in a standard way it is veey tough for me! Without considering that If I am constantly unsuccessful each year applying many times , the years go go and go, and you would reach an old age through which train operate company might not hire you because, due to your age, might have a physical problem that does not give you the chance to be successful. There are always excuses from TOC not to hire me, always!

Take my advice. Get your foot in the door with whatever role you can get, and then apply for driver internally.

Of course, but if you have thousands of applications, you will filter out people whichever way you can. If you are keen to move into the rail industry then try other roles like dispatching, or gateline staff. It is not personal - you don't seem to grasp just how competitive it is to become a railway driver.

We are going around in circles here though. Can we keep all further discussion to the vacancy and progress of candidates.

Not heard much from EMR regarding a liverpool depot since this thread, anyone know if they're still going ahead with it?
From what I've heard. Yes and no. Apparently TPE are extending their Cleethorpes service from Manchester Airport to Liverpool, making the need for EMR to run it redundant. However you never know. Its 50/50..?
