Just sending this out as I am sure someone knows the answer. I recently had the dubious experience of getting the 04:56 from Nottingham to Norwich and discovered it does a completely different route instead of going directly via Grantham and Peterborough it went round the XC route via Melton and Loughborough. As far as I can see this is the only train on the timetable that does this diverted route. Does anyone know the reason or is it just a leftover from a previous timetable.

I believe it is booked that way so crews can retain competency over the route for when it is needed for diversions.

One other example is Chesterfield to Sheffield where odd trains are booked via Beighton and enter Sheffield from the North.

Suspect it is for route retention? I'm sure they divert that way sometimes In disruption, although someone more knowledgeable may know more.

It provides the early local service on that line and across the Fens which an XC starting at New Street would have to originate not much after at 4am to be able to serve. At present the first XC departs BHM at 05:19.

You’ve got three services in the long term plan (based on Monday to Friday):
  • 1L01 (04:56 Nottingham to Norwich)
  • 1L02 (06:07 Nottingham to Norwich
  • 2E32 (20:13 Peterborough to Nottingham via Leicester)

Wasn't there quite a few Norwich services which went that way about 20-25 years ago?

I travelled regularly on a Saturday service which departed Nottingham about 1300, routed via Melton and Oakham.

Not only does it provide route retention for Nottingham traincrew, it has a reasonable number of regular patrons from Stamford who pay a lot of money for tickets to London (albeit I imagine the way revenue is allocated EMR don't see much of it). Usually get one or two on at Oakham and maybe one at Melton, and a handful from Nottingham either to Loughborough or longer distance journeys.

Both 1L01 and 1L02 have a bit of a different focus to the usual EMR Norwich trains which are heavily linked to Peterborough long distance traffic. 1L01 caters for local traffic from Stamford, is then the first eastbound train into Anglia from Peterborough and March picking up a lot of traffic for Cambridge that changes at Ely, and then fills up again into Norwich.

1L02 is much more heavily loaded from the Stamford line stations into Peterborough and then again with commuters into Ely but has largely missed the Norwich commuters arriving after 9.

They've been running this way for decades now.

2E32 comes in useful on the frequent occasions that Cross Country are not turning up and is the descendant of 2R92 which used to get the Spalding shuttle unit back to Nottingham from the early 1990s until 2021 or so.

I am regularly scheduled to get 1L02 from East Midlands Parkway to Norwich but coming from Long Eaton the connection is often late (a Sheffield to St Pancras) working so I then have to go to Nottingham to get to Norwich, it’s a right pain in the ar$e.

Although this re-routing has good results - providing an early service and retention of route knowledge - its origins were somewhat different.

In the early days of Sectorisation infrastructure costs were allocated on a prime user/avoidable basis.

The sector that later became Regional Railways was Prime User for some sections of the route via Grantham. Their early morning and late evening services required longer Signal Box opening hours (in effect, an extra shift), and because they were the Prime User they received all the (not inconsiderable) extra costs for this. In simple terms by not using the route at these times the signalling costs were alloocated to the next user down the hierarchy, Freight, and Regional Railways escaped them. On the route they transferred to they only paid avoidable (=marginal) costs, because they weren't the Prime User, and the signal boxes were open and paid for by the Prime User.

Regional Railways at that time had something of a reputation for escaping costs by exploiting the system to 'dump' them on other Sectors rather than actual cost reduction management.
