Presumably the 158s are old enough to have grandfather rights allowing them to do this? AFAIK anything built post-privatisation, e.g. 170s, would not be allowed to call at stations with short platforms without SDO.

Desiros have unit deselect. So in the case of TPE that means board the correct portion, but in the case of LNR that can mean walk through to the correct portion.

222s have Selective Door Opening. It's used at Long Eaton as only 4 coaches are platformed.

I think 7 car 222s have run to Liverpool on Grand National days which would mean they were too long for a few stations on the route.

Class 185s have carriaged based selective door operation, so at stations like Meadowhall 4 of 6 can open.
SWR have refit their Desiros with full SDO, and LNWR are in the process of upgrading theirs.

The 350/2s will also need to be upgraded to it if they are to run as 8 car trains on any services.

They also have "Unit de-select" (technically it's UDB - Unit door blocking) which functions independently from C-ASDO to lock out carriages.

And bits of the Cambrian line… some platforms are less than half a carriage long anyway! I forget which, but one of them is “hang around in the middle of the train, which door exactly depends how good the driver is at stopping” which always amuses newbies not used to it!

It reminds me of stop I had to make (not in the UK) where rearview mirrors (which aren t common in UK operation) were quite handy to place the door at the middle of the DMU at the very end of the platform, while obstructing the LC right after the platform, to ensure all doors fitted into the platform.

It appears very common for 15x drivers on Northern to stick their head out of the window to check positioning where things are tight. I've seen it done many times.
