Hi all,
The following seem to be regularly switching between 5 and 10 car formations. Are these timetables or short forms when 5 car?
06:30 SHF - STP
17:32 STP - SHF

16:02 and 19:02 from STP are more reliable as 10 car, but surely EMR should prioritise peak services?

Most likely a short form and should be 10 car. The 1300 from Sheffield was cancelled today which might explain why the 1732 was only a 5 car. As for the 1602, it splits when it gets to Sheffield to make the 1837 and 1900 back to London so really can't be a 5 car.

And the 19:02 certainly used to be the busiest service of the day being the first after the peak on which many time restricted tickets was valid.

Same with many other long distance services where the first train after the evening peak can be mega busy with passengers using flexible off-peak tickets.

The second unit runs in both of these servics so usually if something needs to be shortformed before the day starts they'll both be sacrificed together.

The 06:30 can be busy at times but it's not unbearable if short formed. After Leicester it's usually fine. The 17:32 can sometimes depart with plenty of room to spare on a single 5 car, so again isn't too bad if short formed. All other 10 car services are important for either capacity or diagramming

Another passenger also mentioned that his trains are "always" short formed, until I pointed out that he always catches the two services that are first to be sacrificed

I'd disagree on the 06:30, it's pretty unpleasant south of Leicester when short formed. Usually the advice to passengers at Leicester is to board the 07:43 (from Nottingham) which follows it but that's not ideal for those who are already on board, and it arrives in London around 20 minutes later so not ideal.

Judging by journey check recently the number of services booked for 222s either short formed, with no reservations or without First or Standard disabled toilet facilities suggests EMR/Hitachi are really struggling with them at the moment. It became noticable after the 180s were withdrawn. Class 360 short formations are a consistent problem too, although when there's only 12 diagrams for 21 units that's less excusable!

It's hit and miss. Towards the end of the week you'll find that the rear half of a 10 car can have about 15 people, the start of the week it'll be mostly busy and would well and truly struggle if short formed.
