i hold an Advance for the 11:32 EMR from St Pancras to Derby (2h18 journey) on Saturday 19th July. looking on Seatfrog, minimum bid is £13 — is EMR’s first class worth it in terms of both catering and comfort, or should I instead save money for food at STP?

There's usually a good selection of sandwiches, snacks, hot drinks and soft drinks available. I think the seats are quite nice but I don't remember what other TOCs are like. There's no complimentary alcohol. I think you could make it worth it for £13 personally.

In my view you’re better off buying food at M&S. That said I’d potentially pay the extra to avoid the cheap seats on the meridians, which are pretty grim these days.

Probably worth it for the extra space and snacks on what will probably be a busy service.

I'd say it's worth it for £13, you're getting a nice trip round the Corby diversion (that's why it's 2h18 rather than the usual 1h35ish) so you might as well enjoy it comfort. Also, as it's diversion day there are half as many trains as usual for a Saturday so standard class might be a bit crowded.

If you're not familiar with the diversion, you do get to travel over the splendid Harringworth (aka Welland) viaduct just north of Corby, pass through Melton Mowbray, come into Leicester from the north and then reverse to Derby.
