EMR - Day return dated three weeks in advance

I would say that both the ticket seller and the customer should have noticed, but experience tells me that sometimes both fail to notice.
Plus three other members of railway staff that inspected the tickets at various points during the day.

I would guess that the ticket office clerk forgot to reset the date after dealing with a previous customer
Yes, that is the explanation offered by EMR in our further correspondence.

Anyway, thank you for all the comments and debate, will certainly be more aware of dates on tickets in the future. I do remain of the view that it's not reasonable to expect a customer to spot an error that four fully trained railway staff failed to, but appreciate the other views.

Also pleased to report that EMR have offered an apology and indicated they are mindful to cover the equivalent Delay Repay value. It was never a big value, but feels to me the right thing to do, and will cost less than if I had refunded the technically unused tickets, which I would not have been particularly comfortable with.

Further update - EMR have kindly refunded the full purchase price of our tickets to reflect the disappointment caused.
