Could this be the start of the long awaited refurbishment? We can but hopes.

No, this will be the final few units to undergo the repainting program. After tomorrows move it will stand as 15 done, 6 to go.
That's a shame. Whilst a decent looking exterior is nice to see it's the interior that matters more to most people.

I feel that it would have made sense to do both at the same time or the interiors first.

From what I heard last, the interior refurbishment has even been signed off yet so it won't be happening for a while - which is a shame, because these 360s have no plug sockets, no tray tables, and inferior 3+2 seating.

I'm pretty sure even the 170s that we had back in the days of Midland Mainline (before we got the 222s) still had 2+2 seating...

They did, even in first class, until the centre cars were added with 2+1 first class section. The 170/1s also had very poor legroom compared to other 170s.

All Turbostars had 2+2 seating, being narrower than the 20m Electrostars

Look on the bright side, more seats seem to mean more cheap advanced singles.

I'd take that over less seats and a higher price - although they could do with chargers.

I was on a 360 yesterday on the 8.15 pm departure from St Pancs.

Was an 8 carriage and had the entire front carriage to myself. Nice smooth ride and to time, was actually one of the nicest rail journies i've had for a while.

As before, Nope. And with the current turmoil in Westminster I cant see much being cleared by the DfT for a while.
If Boris thought it would take the heat off, he'd probably announce that they'd be refitted to Pullman standard!

(and then nothing would happen, still).

Any idea when the 360s will be internally refurbished?
I would set our expectations at no refurbishment taking place at all - there have been so many disappointments during EMR’s tenure of the East Midlands franchise that anything that gets authorised refurbishment-wise would be a bonus. Ditto the 170s.

Last rumour that was whispered about was, budgetary issues, Siemens came back with a very very high per unit refit cost. So was back to the drawing board. Possibly a bit of a hybrid keeping the middle 2 coaches as 2+3 with retrims and new carpets. With the 2 driving coaches getting the new 2+2 Lean seating and carpets. No screens or PIS updates. No one really knows. It's definatly getting busy out there now.

That would be corner-cutting of the highest order - a huge smack in the face and quite frankly insulting towards Connect users. In fact, one could argue more insulting than leaving them unrefurbished (at least their being unrefurbished would ensure consistency - a half job would be a visual representation of how little the DfT think of the Connect service and its passengers).

If that’s how the 360s end up being, I’ll simply drive to anywhere along the Connect route. I dare say I’m not the only one.

To be fair, some people do like 3+2, and there are a few other classes like that - the ones that immediately spring to mind (as I used one yesterday) are the Chiltern 165s (on which the 2+2 doesn't always go first), and there are also some Southern Electrostars like that. There is some strength in it - groups like 3+2, and those doing longer journeys can take the 2+2. I've advocated a layout like that for Thameslink before.

And over at Northampton mixed 350 formations are common.

2+2 1st is unacceptable, though, on what is allegedly a long distance service. Unless they're dropping 1st entirely.

They also need to reduce the Anytime fares to be more "commuter" level when an InterCity quality of service is not being provided. At the moment I'd drive to Northampton simply because of how much cheaper it is!

I belive it's being dropped completely. Given the journey length it was never especially well used on the 222s. Catering in both standard and first was entirely withdrawn when the 360s started up, having been reduced over the last few years.

Looks like another unit returned to Cricklewood yesterday.

The whole fleet was obliterated yesterday.

North from Bedford after the 2056 departure last night, only the 2256 and 0100 ran.

2125
2156
2226
2343 all cancelled.

EMR said unit faults.

What is actually failing on the units? Is it problems common to similar family of units, or a unique problem to their maintenace on formerly GA and now EMR, or is it lots of little things and they're just falling to bits?

Cab aircon is a major issue at the moment (it must be remembered the cabs aren’t designed to be driven with windows open. Opening them has almost no benefit and is *massively* distracting due to the noise created).

Units still seem to be suffering from cumulative faults due to gaps between maintenance, even down to things like windscreen washers running out of liquid (this is a *major* issue at this time of year and if it happens en route will likely lead to the train being unable to proceed).

If EMR cannot get the basic things right it's no wonder that the service is so bad.

It's worth taking a moment to consider that peak services should be 12 cars with 8 being a worse case scenario.

Something I’ve said many times - given Abellio’s history of underproviding and submitting fairytale bids to the DfT, they should never have been given the franchise.

I have some sympathy for the windscreen washers issue. In my car the other day i topped up but there was so many insects constantly splatting into my screen i'd run out by the time i got home.

Weren't they the only ones left after the DfT disqualified everyone else for not accepting liability for the pension blackhole? Unfortunately public sector procurement is about who tickets the boxes rather than who is the most competent.

I believe that the First/Trenitalia bid was withdrawn in order to concentrate on the AWC franchise and the West Coast Partnership as a whole. But yes, Abellio were the only ones left in the running after the disqualifications.

The DfT can dress it up how they want; but the fact is that it was a rotten process leading to a company winning the franchise that knows that, no matter how badly it performs, the DfT will do nothing at all to punish it for its failings.

The DFT did say at thr time that although the other bidders were disqualified the Abellio bid was the best in any case, rail passengers can be assured that we got the best value and quality that was available. So there you go....
