Will it be the 156s that are eventually displaced as a result of the 170 transfers? How long will it be before this happens (and the 156s are withdrawn by EMR?)

Am I correct to say that still none of EMRs regional fleet has benefitted from any internal refurbishments. If so have the stickers that were displayed inside at least some of the ex scotrail 170s - with v tatty interiors - saying this was 'coming soon' been removed I wonder.

No Turbostars have been refurbished yet, but I can imagine EMR are waiting on the rest of the fleet to join first before sending units off for refurbishment first. Don't forget the final fleet has been in something of a state of flux since the franchise launch too - the TfW 170s an unexpected bonus, Liverpool Nottingham Norwich not carved up as initially expected meaning of course the 158s now staying.

Very credible given that stock shortages have meant that no more other than the bare minimum could be taken out or service - taking more out of service for refurbishments would have exacerbated an already critical situation. On the other hand, it could be that no money will be made available for any refurbishment over and above, for example, seat covering replacement and maybe installing plugs. No cited sources - merely a personal feeling to convey the possibility of the DfT saying: tough, you’re getting them and they’ll remain as is.

At the minimum all they really need is seat covers, carpets and plugs, and a rebuild of some seat fittings to allow replacement of missing/broken ones. A new phenomenon provoked by those of large girth choosing to sit on the edge of them for some reason is broken tables - there's been a huge number broken in half! They've been replaced by tables from 15x units.

They could do with some serious mechanical love too mind but they're not exactly a bad train to begin with. If despeccing to keeping an already high quality interior is the price to pay for keeping services running on all the routes it's one I'd happily pay!

Thanks. Sadly they are just a 'do nothing' franchisee it seems to me. Nothing done about 360s either and they have plenty of them spare to send off for refurb. If the govt won't let them get on with doing what they promised to do they ought to tell govt to run it themselves and hand back the keys. By not doing that it just proves they are making too much money out of it to do that....

Two of them will be transferring this weekend.
Thats excellent news for EMR. I wonder what TFW will put in place to replace the ones that are going. I know a 153 is currently eplacing the 170 that did the Newport to Cross Keys journeys so possibly that's one unit replaced.

I didnt know 170s were cleared on the marches line
Me neither. Its a shame some couldnt have been used on the Manchester-Cardiff's although that would have involved other depots being trained in them. But they would be better substitutes for a 175 than a 150 or pair of 153s!!

Maybe it training that is the issue and not that they cant go up marches

I don't know if that is the path, but it was an odd one that stood out to me. Cardiff Mainline sign 170s and the Marches so they could in theory go up there. I don't know about full clearance, but they are definitely cleared around Hereford for WMT.

I noticed that path too, but I did wonder if it was an old path for the Sprinter repaints / refurbishments that hadn’t been removed yet. I’d have thought they would be more likely to take the direct route via Chepstow / Birmingham etc across to Derby.

The stickers inside the 170s still exist. The former first-class areas are particularly tatty, with a shoddy cover up of the hole in the tables where the lamps previously were, and most of the reclining seats are knackered. The plugs working are very hit-and-miss.

The plugs do generally work, but sometimes get switched off due to belligerent clowns trying to do stupid things like charge up e-scooters. Once turned off they're a pain to turn back on as the circuit breaker for them is in the roof space above the ceiling panels.

175s will hopefully be going spare soon and currently you get a couple of 150 units on Manchester diagrams so that will also free up some to release the 170s to emr

The issue is that most Marches trains run from West Wales to Manchester. So Carmarthen, Shrewsbury etc depots are also involved. It would require a change of unit if other depots involved so probably not worth it.

So do turquoise stickers from Anglia Railways days!
No doubt - but do the turquoise stickers from Anglia days say "these trains will soon be refurbished internally" or words to that effect which have been there for about a year I think - as that was the EMR stickers I was referring to, not previous operators stickers.

The EMR stickers are still there. Admittedly I only sat in the former first-class, but they were there on all the ex-ScotRail and ex-GA 170s. I didn’t see any on the ex-LM ones though.

Thanks. The ex LM ones have an interior that remains above the quality standard of anything else on the EMR fleet I seem to recall. Anglia one I have been in not so bad either. Scotrail as you say, esp former 1st class area, in my experience too.

I was only referring to Cardiff for the functionality of this move, not regular service. As I say, it may not be the path, but let's wait and see.

This looks like an interesting path for tomorrow, heading for Crewe for repaint perhaps? https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C25714/2022-10-29/detailed
I'm not sure that'll be the path for repainting, it's part of the WTT whereas any stock transfers are normally STP. Plus its not pathed as a 170. I'll gladly be proved wrong though. I think a post above might be right about it being a leftover path for the 153 refurbishments.

Some more information on this: All 3 two car TfW ones (170270/271/272) are due to move this Sunday (30th October) 270/272 are staying at Etches to have some work done before they enter service. 271 is ready but due to capacity restrictions at Etches its been moved to Barrow Hill (presumably until work on the others is complete and they can all enter service together). All should be wrapped eventually like 170273 is.
Paths should show on RTT shortly.

As these will be joining the EMR fleet long term, I’m surprised they will be wrapped instead of sending them off for painting ala ex ScotRail / West Mids units.

When all the 170 stock transfers have been completed, does anyone know how many 2-car and how many 3-car sets EMR will have?

Some routes sorely need 3-car sets, Crewe for example, but if there aren't enough available I don't expect EMR would double up 2-car sets, like it has been so much easier to do with 156/168s.

When the 3 TfW ones arrive EMR will have 8x3 cars and 11x2 cars.
In regards to Crewe, I really hope there's a 3-car 170 diagram on that route from the December TT change because the GTR ones would have taken over RHL Services by then, which should free up the ex-Scotrail ones a bit.

Assuming nothing changes, EMR will have 44 x 170 units, 27 x 2 car and 17 x 3 car.

170201-208 (3 car)
170270-273 (2 car)
170416-424 (3 car)
170501-517 (2 car)
170530-535 (2 car)

Believe it's 16 3 cars as 170421 (running as 171201) is staying at Southern
