Actually this unit isn't allowed to run under the Northern guise until 24th May. Currently only delivered for the relevant conversion mods to take place. This unit is also one of the Northumberland Line units that will assist with the release of 158's (when it's ready).
Isn’t allowed? What is preventing 156408 from being allowed to run?
Yes, apparently only 158s will be allowed to work the Blyth and Tyne route when it opens to passenger services due to timings.
Does this mean that only 158s will be cleared and substitutions can only be for other 158s, or will it be possible to see 156s or even 170s as on the Lime Street - Norwich which is also “only 158s”. Note that TfW runs Sprinter substitutions at 100mph timings on Manchester - Cardiff, which can’t keep time.

The unit diagrams will be booked for 158s on all services on the B&T route. But 156s will probably be used should a 158 be unavailable. The crews working the route will sign both types of traction.

It's part of the leasing agreement that 156408 doesn't get transferred until end of May to Northern, but as EMR are off-loading these units they agreed to give it to us earlier so we can get it modified and converted onto the Northern exam schedule early.

So as I see it currently. Northern's ex EMR 156s in service are, 401-4/12-15/18-19 and 22. With 408 at NH, 411 at Crewe for painting and 409/16 and 17 at Wolverton receiving body repairs.

The remaining 3 at EMR, 405-6 and 410 due before the end of the Month.

I suspect EMR are happy to have the depot space, the sudden deluge of 3 car 170s will be eat up the stabling space.

On paper there's spare units every day at the minute, albeit the flakey nature of the 158 and 170 fleet does mean that in practice those spares often don't last!

Today 158904 and 158786 were paired on Southport services whilst 156403 was spare at Wigan Wallgate.
Block on at Hindley all week, very restricted service hourly Southport-Man Ox Rd via Chat Moss, and Wigan-Rainford shuttle (no service Wigan-Bolton or Wigan-Manchester via Atherton) means that there are plenty spare this week. No 769's in service this week either.

Eastcroft very limited for stabling space now, usually 30 plus cars sat every night!

156408 appears to have escaped into traffic early with Northern in debranded EMT blue, it was pottering around on CLC stoppers early between Liverpool and Oxford Road - photo shows 156408 in bay platform 5 at Manchester Oxford Road this morning.

Nice! Hopefully it will receive some form of refurbished or tarted up interior while it’s there, otherwise it’ll be a bit of a let down after all the work it’s had so far.

You wouldn’t happen to know the progress of 150202 would you Dave?

Currently 150202 is due out around 30th June. But that date could move a bit.
Do you reckon it'll be replaced with 409 when it arrives?
No. 156409 is part of the original cascade. I got my date wrong for 156408, it wasn't supposed to be released before the 15th May, obviously work was completed in time to release it on the 15th.
