EMR Allocations

I check the EMR app daily for any delays or cancellations etc but sometimes see odd allocations.

For example yesterday I noticed quite a lot of the Derby to Crewe trains were 3 carriages but I noticed a couple of the other EMR routes had been shortened from 3 or 4 carriages to just 2 carriages.

I've seen this happen quite a few times and wondered if there's any particular reason why say a 4 carriage route is shortened to give the Crewe route an extra carriage. Thanks.

It is usually to bury a defective cab or provide an additional toilet if the one on the 2 car has failed. 4 car trains are with a few exceptions diagrammed for 2 x 2 car so one of them is unlikely to be directly shortened for this purpose. One of the class 153 units is used instead.

I noticed a diagram on the Crewe route was a 3 car late yesterday and the diagram it was on ended up in Crewe overnight which would mean a 3 car out today on one of the early Crewe departures. I'm not sure why the Crewe was strengthened to 3 car.

I would imagine there may be the odd unit waiting for the wheel lathe at Etches Park and maybe the 170 not running on the robin hood line might have a affect as well (156 or 158 vice the 170).

153308 and 156907. Worked to Nottingham for servicing then dropping on to the 1145 to Skegness. Could be a full toilet going to be emptied.

Thanks for the informative replies so far. Genuinely fascinating to find out reasons behind the adding or reducing of carriages. Never thought it could be anything like a defective cab or toilet for example.

With the example mentioned about the 3 carriages being overnight at Crewe, what happens to the train staff? Is it a taxi home and back to Crewe the following morning or do different train staff work the following morning departure from Crewe to Derby?

Still on allocations, on the rare occasions the Crewe to Derby route is allocated a class 222, is 5 carriages possible or is it restricted to 4 carriages? I can't remember from the last time I caught it.

Two units stable overnight in Crewe. A taxi is provided between Derby and I think Nottingham (depending on where they book on) to/from Crewe for the staff.

Normally it is a 4 car 222 (The 'hot spare' set which can be used if required) which goes done the Crewe line but a 5 or even 7 car is possible as they have Selective Door Opening (SDO). 5 car 222's only really go to Crewe on the midland grand national in March.
