Empire Builder?

In Seattle right now. I'll be travelling on the "Empire Builder" Amtrak service from there to Chicago on Monday. Has anyone on the forum travelled on this train or have any other relavent info - much appreciated in advance,

Also for the record I'm quite jealous as the Empire Builder is on my list of routes to be done before I die ;)

I travelled in the other direction. My greatest memory is the hours and hours of fields of corn, punctuated only by grain silos. Some of the little towns where the train stops still look like they are on the frontier! Look out for Glasgow!

IIRC the train split in the middle of the night at Spokane. There were two portions, one for Seattle and one for Portland, I assume this is still the case?

Yes, I did the trip about 5 years ago and I was in the Portland section. The downside was that I had to walk the length of the train to get to the restaurant/buffet as the Portland sleepers were right at the back.

Got into Portland on time and I had a 4-hour layover for the Coast Starlight. Found a sports bar about six blocks away that could get the Champions League on TV which kicked off at 11.45am local time... that was perfect for lunch and a few beers before strolling back for a 14.30 departure!

I did the Coast Starlight all the way from Seattle, but I got off at San Luis Obispo. I found the train a lot livelier than the Empire Builder!
