What do you do here? Serious question.

You're in an almost empty carriage, a couple of people are sitting. One of them just sits up, proclaims himself to be the "son of God" and pulls out the biggest bloody knife you ever saw and starts knifing people left, right and center. You're next. How do you handle it?

Would you go ask the ticket inspector for help? Is there any sort of emergency stop on trains.

Serious question. Thanks.

It's all about emergency situations. What would be the procedure here?

Not based on any experiences.

I could have just put "Emergency Procedures" as a title, but I thought that would be a bit dry.

On a train, CCTV, other passengers etc dictate that this is very unlikely to happen.

The truthful answer would be to probably evacuate myself, and then hide under a seat.

The macho answer would be I'd take him down.

You never know. No one knows what they would do in this situation until something like it happens. You could run, you could fight, you could be stabbed, you could overpower him, you could wet yourself, you could reason with him, you could freeze, who knows. Everyone is capable of extraordinary things when their life is in danger.

If I was stood up, floor the lil **** and stand in the middle of his back and if he kept fighting, use more extreme restraint techneques.

If he walked past me while sat down then he'd have a broken leg, if he stoped infront of me, sitting down and I was on a table, he'd be pulled over it with his head placed into the window at speed. There are any number of options, all of witch would be causing the combatant pain, in a cerious way. Bearing in mind, I'm usually wearing safety boots, have strong legs and know where and at what angle to hit to detach a knee, I don't think he'd be carrying on for long if I got the first hit in the right place.

Alternativly, rip the knife from his hand and stab him back with it, provided there was operating CCTV on the unit.

Very true. Extraordinary things do happen when the adrenaline is over, but I still think I'd be more comfortable under the seat!

I don't know how I would react and I hope I never have to find out!

We can all say what we think and hope we woudl do in any given emergency situation, but we may just freeze, panic or gain superhuman powers of strength due to adrenalin. In the heat of the moment we may have no choice over what we do!

In reality I think I would be more likely to wet myself and gibber uncontrollably than do anything heroic!

...or you could sh*t yourself and sit there in fear. You don't know you could do all that.

These "what would you do?" questions are kind of moot. No one knows what they would do.

I wasn't really talking about how you would go about knocking out the attacker (even though they are entertaining), just talking about what would the emergency procedure be? Would the train be stopped? Who would they call for? The BTP?

Perhaps rather than what would you do, you are asking what should you do? ;)

Personally, the last thing I'd do would be to pull the cord. I wouldn't want to be stopped in the middle of nowhere with a madman running riot. Keep moving to the next station. It'd be easier to evacuate and to get the police on board as soon as possible.

GBH with intent. That goes far beyond reasonable force!

Reasonable force in an open space where traditional restraint is possible yes, in the middle of a pacer carrage where you can't make a decent swing at them, it would be aopen to more argument about the definition of 'resonable force'

If you where facing them theres nowhere to move to the side, and attacking head on somone with any weapon means disarming them of it, and potentially using it against them, it's very difficult to drop somone in a corridor, after disarming them, facing forwards, much easyer with side access or from behind as pepole tend to fall forwards.

And to be honest, mad man running down the carrage with a knife, not using it in a threataning manner but just stabbing away, is very hard to stop without a weapon of your own, if he's being threataning and hesitating there are the two typical ways of defusing the sitation, with or without force, but either are a big gamble. Hence why we started giving police tazers...

Is what I was trained to do, granted it was hostage training that is slightly diferent, but it's of a similar ilk.

I've had similar training and I still don't know what I would do because I've never had reason to do it before. Training stacks the odds in your favour but never guarantees.

Behaviour wise, I've been in a live situation, but the odds were greatly stacked in my favour. Sheld, Vest, Batton, etc. But it all depends on exactly whats happening, what unit I'm on, where I'm sat or stood, how he/she is behaving, if it's a he or she, size of their weapon, if the're on their own, if I was armed myself, what manner of protection I have about my person, if anyone else is on the train, what everyone else is doing, and most of all, if I'm with somone else who has has similar or the same training, two against one is much better than one on one.

Eg, if I'm stood next to the doors in the combined carrage at the rear of a 185 with them acting in a threatening manner with 2 or 3 standing passengers, one of whom is behind him and brandishing somone's walking stick from behind them, the emergency stop would be being pulled (the green paddle), when he moved toward the front of the unit under the accelaration forces, destablised on his feet moving to grab the handrail, he'd then be disarmed while distracted and put on the floor in the carrage, then sat on until either the BTP arrive, or the unit moves into a station. Proberbly with one sat on his back with his hands under it, and one standing with their foot on his kneck.

On the other hand, if I was with my ex. bf, I'd let him deal with it, he's better trained than I am.

Honestly i would run the other way. As im in no way capable of taking on someone else, especially one who is armed. Also i would be dialing 999 from my mobile.

But if i was with my other half or my brother or a family member i would most likely put myself between them and the person with the weapon, as i would not want harm to happen to them.

Call the Bay Team (they're a local lot, tend to know their stuff when it comes to fighting) to join the train at Dalgety Bay (it likely would on the trains I get) and leave them to 'bam him up'. Haw haw haw.

I suppose it depends, If the train is packed and there is nowhere to go then oyu are more likely to fight, however if there is room I would go and gat the guard (2 vs1, guard using his T Key as a Knuckle duster) Howeve If i was packed, i would throw my Keys/wallet/phone at him, then use the flinch reaction to gget him

There are risks everywhere.

You are probably more likely to be permanently scarred by scalding hot coffee being tipped down you by accident on a moving train than being stabbed on public transport.

If the chap is nutty enough... Drop to your knees, point behind him and say "oh my god it's satan". That'll probably distract him enough to crack him over the head with a handy laptop or shoe.

It's not fun to be threatened at work. Will never forget desperately trying not to gag on a double-barrelled sawn-off shotgun that had been thrust into my mouth. Hearing the dull thump of metal against skull and seeing, out of the corner of my eye, my boss slump to the ground after being pistol-whipped didn't inspire confidence either.
