Emergency brake application

How hard does it brake? I was on a 142 today and it had a long horn then slammed brakes on it felt sharp and when it stopped there was a huge jolt that knocked everyone over. Was that one?

As per above, it does sound like an EBA

It is commonly said that there isn't much to distinguish between an EBA and full service brake application (is that the right term?) which may be used in service, except you got the jolt at the end as the driver doesn't let off the brakes as the train comes to a stand.

On most trains the brake cylinder pressure (which determines the braking power and therefore deceleration rate) is the same for full service and emergency. The only difference is that emergency will sometimes be unreleasable until stopped, might apply faster, if fitted will often activate sanding equipment, and might disengage wheel slide prevention (as it can increase stopping distance compared to just allowing the wheels to lock, and having to reprofile the wheels because they have flatted is cheaper than rebuilding the front of the train because it's hit something). On Electopnumatically braked trains, emergency is almost entirely failsafe too, wheras the other steps might either not be failsafe, or far more at risk of wrongside failure.

Tyne and Wear Metro has disc braking for normal braking and an electromagnetic braking for emergencies, which, when energised, is attracted to the running rails and brings it to a quick halt. I was on a Metro last week coming into Manors when someone pushed the emergency brake (results in a full brake disc application), and that was quite a sudden stop. So guessing that the emergency brake will be even worse.

I think thats about right. Most of the time you wouldn't notice any difference. It is just the jolt at the end.

On 1951/57/63/66 stock (EPB's through to REPs) when using the brake in normal modes was EP brake full application 50PSI brake cylinder pressure, emergency brake dumped the train pipe, so gave a full AUTOMATIC brake application, but still only 50 psi, and could be released by moving the brake controller back to 'release and running' (or am I showing my age calling it that?!).

Of course if there was a failure of the supply to the EP brake while in use, the automatic (westinghouse) brake cut in without driver intervention, thereby makiing it fail-safe.

I was on one of my occasional trips on the Metro yesterday, and happened to notice a flattish thing between the wheels on each bogie, a small distance from the rail - is that the electromagnetic brake you referred to?

Aye, before I knew what it was I had assumed it was a normal brake.

Been told that when ex-mainline staff start work at the Depot they are very confused that a train has a brake like that.

Most trains have a higher EBA and sanders blow off automatically to aid the stop.

On the majority of EMU's in mainline service the service brake steps correspond to retardation rates of 3%, 6% & 9% of g, with emergency brake giving 12% of g,

The actual peak deceleration rates achieved will be higher then this as the retardation rate is an average and takes into account time for brake pressure to build and the fact that disc brakes do not give instant "bite".

All emergency brake applications on mainline EMU's drop rheo and/or regen braking and revert to full friction braking, with WSP remaining functional.

Some classes have a time delay, normally 2 mins, before the brakes will release after a unit has been brought to a halt with emergency brake. This is to deter the use of emergency brake in service to manage the stresses on the bogie frame, generally on units that had the emergency brake retardation rate enhanced to 12% of g.
