I have been past EMD Longport many times and wondered what the site history is. Is it a converted wagon repair facility or some such?

Comparing old and new Quail maps, the EMD facility is on the site of Longport Freight Depot, with a very similar track layout (aside from the inevitable reduction in the number of sidings)
The cargowaggon just visible in the shed in the background of this picture would be inside the current EMD facility:

Comparing this picture from 2018 taken from a similar position, the overhead line gantry is the same one that was above the first Carless tank in the older picture (with the same lamp visible behind it). The silhouette of the building is the same, but there are a lot more trees blocking the view!

I didn't realise the EMD facility had reused the building from the freight depot - it looks quite tall so possibly the original freight depot had craneage facilities inside which meant the building was the right size and height for whatever equipment EMD needed to install.

Yeah, to add to what Adrian has said, it was formerly Longport full loads depot, handling a variety of general traffic including parcels, steel coil from Middlesbrough (which would presumably require an overhead crane to unload) and materials including china clay for the local pottery industry.
Not sure when it was first established as such, though was perhaps a development of a pre-existing traditional goods yard?

Looking at the 1978 Baker and the 2005 Quail, I think the Full Loads Depot was there in 1978, although there was also a parcels depot that would probably have gone out of use when C&D was abandoned in 1981. Digging deep into my memory, I am fairly sure that there was Class 6 with Longport as the destination that went north out of Exeter at the beginning of the 1980s.
