Does anyone have an email address for Arriva Buses which will actually go to someone with some common sense and clout.

I regularly catch the 18.08 London Bridge to Uckfield train which is packed, I alight at Crowborough along with scores of other passengers and as I cross the footbridge I often watch the bus departing the station with no passengers as they are still getting off the train.

The bus service is subsidised by East Sussex Council using money from Morrisons and no doubt when that money the bus will be cancelled as there is no demand. However no regular commuter will rely on the bus if they have an alternative mode of transport available because they cannot guarantee the bus will there especially if the train is a minute or two late.

I also think that as is already subsidised the fare structure should be changed to encourage passengers (and once they are used to travelling on the bus fares can go up!), and the route should be changed so on its circular route it returns to the station rather than sitting in the High Street, this would mean those that live on the return section of the rote might be tempted to use the bus.

I therefore want to email the Council, Southern (as they could put a Passenger Information System in the station window so the bus driver could see when the train is expected), and Aviva with my ideas but it needs to go to someone sensible!

You'll probably have more luck with the Council as presumably Arriva get paid so long as they run the bus to time.

Yeah they do. They ring up a month later and deliver a copied and pasted response with no option for questioning that.

Indeed. Let's try and write their response for them!

"I am sorry that you miss the bus. Unfortunately drivers are not allowed to wait for late running rail connections as our buses must depart on time because this can affect the punctuality further along the route and for future services on this bus. I am sorry you frequently miss this bus however this would be an issue to take up with Southern as they are the ones running the trains delayed.

We occasionally review our services with councils and bus user groups to discuss the requirements and needs of our services and I will make sure your views are included in our next meeting."

Done :D

A bus can be 1 minute early or 5 mins late and still counted as on time.

Waiting a couple of minutes is fine in my book.

Looking at the issue, I would suggest that you hit the Council rather than the bus operator because the bus operator is running the service that the council has told them to run.

I am not familiar with the diagramming of the route but it would appear from the timetable that the 1911 departure from Crowborough station is timed to arrive at Crowborough Cross at 1924. There is then a 1926 departure back to the station which if it is the same vehicle delaying the 1911 departure may impact on that service causing people to miss their trains.

Although on most days there's likely to be a lot more people coming from London at 1906 than heading away from Crowborough a little later.

That is true. However should the Council who are subsidising the route or Traffic Commissioners become aware of continued late running through passenger complaints and/or their own investigations this may lead to action being taken. Penalty payments to council and possible withdrawal of contract to run this and other subsidised services. Traffic commissioners may impose Arriva operating a free service for failing to comply with the route as registered or impose sanctions on their 'O' licence.
As this is a subsidised route which is being operated as per council spec I think the first port of call is the Council suggesting a "Bus will wait up to x minutes for arrival of train from London Bridge.

You, as the OP of this thread, can amend the title thread and the first sentence to the correct wording. Go to the first posting on the thread..click on EDIT...then click on GO ADVANCED...you can now amend Aviva to Arriva. Complete as normal by clicking on SAVE.

Thanks for all the replies. As it happens East Sussex County Council are reviewing their supported bus route policy so I have commented in respect of that and will email them and Arriva later this week.

In response to some of the other posts in the thread the 227 and 228 are effectively circular routes one going anticlockwise the other clockwise from the town centre to the town centre via the station so my theory is the train station is the better place for the bus to dwell between runs, well certainly in the evening as its likely to be the prime pick up drop off point. Also if the down train is late, the next up train will also be late as it is the same train. The train goes to Uckfield and returns whilst the bus charges round the town.

Anyway thanks for the answers.
