I am due to travel Birmingham New St to Cambridge on Sunday with Cross Country. However, I have split tickets Birmingham to Peterborough and Peterborough to Cambridge. Is it likely that my tickets will be accepted from Birmingham to Cambridge via London instead of from Peterborough if I choose to avoid bus replacement? Also are first class tickets accepted likewise on other routes if I decide to take that option?

NRE states:

CrossCountry recommends that customers travelling between Birmingham New Street / Nuneaton / Peterborough and Cambridge / Stansted Airport travel via London. To help you with your journey, tickets will be accepted on the following services:

Chiltern Railways between London Marylebone and Birmingham Snow Hill
East Midlands Trains on any reasonable route
Greater Anglia on any reasonable route
Great Northern on any reasonable route
London Midland between London Euston and Birmingham New Street
Virgin Trains between London Euston and Birmingham New Street
Virgin Trains East Coast between London Kings Cross and Peterborough
London Underground on any reasonable route

So I would say yes you can travel via London. If you hold a first class ticket then there should be no problem travelling first either.

EDIT - If you are travelling direct to London from Brum given the split tickets I would approach the TM of the London bound train though showing the two tickets just in case!

I will have a return ticket from Sandy back to Manchester, on Sunday evening I`will be using the East Anglian day rover to Ely and then buy a single to Peterbough to continue my journey, I wonder if I would beable to get back via London
