Don't feel sorry for me, feel sorry for people who can't appreciate words. Look at this way. If you went to see a play and you couldn't hear what the actors were saying would you still enjoy it because the scenery and costumes were great?
I don't have a narrow definition. Scat singing - a development of jazz - is not in the same category because it doesn't use words.

What a pity I can't go to Download this year...

I'm impressed with anyone who can sing in German, it isn't a language that lends itself to conventional rhythmic norms. Rammstein are great, and with some rudimentary a-level German you can understand most of it.

There's plenty of songs in Welsh by the Super Furry Animals that I really like despite not understanding a word!

All this reminds me of a story told by a lyricist whose name I cannot remember. He was in the loo and the chap next to him was humming a tune. Lyricist chap says "I wrote that song", other chap says "I thought XXXX (can't remember the name) wrote it". Lyricist says "he wrote the tune, I wrote the words". Other chap says "I wasn't humming the words".
