If you don’t want a long walk, that would be the best option. Changing at Stratford from GA and Paddington to GWR would be much quicker - but would require more walking.

When you change at Whitechapel, all you have to do is remain on the same platform.

I presume you are coming from the Greater Anglia route?

Then yes it is but quicker to do this:

Greater Anglia > Stratford
Change at Stratford (lifts available, short change)
Stratford > Whitechapel (one stop)
Whitechapel > Reading (same platform change).

You could also change at Paddington for GWR, but that is a longer walk (although again fully accessible by lift).

Or you could stay on the GA train to London Liverpool Street and change to Elizabeth line to Reading from there. It is a slightly further walk than changing at Shenfield or Stratford but in my experience the lifts have been more reliable.

Yes but the OP did say they didn't want a "long walk" and it is much longer from Liverpool St through both sets of barriers, and the connecting tunnel via 2/3 sets of lifts hence offering Stratford. Even the additional change is as smooth as changing can be (same platform, indoors with seating available).

From when I've done the journey before, I would say that it is probably better changing at Stratford, rather than Shenfield. I think it's a little further platform-to-platform at Stratford, but it would negate the need for a long walk to the exit at Reading (from where I remember the Stratford subways to be). To a degree, it's swings and roundabouts - it would be a quicker journey changing at Stratford, but Shenfield would probably have a shorter walk, by a matter of metres, across the entire journey.

The one thing I would point out about your original plan is that there is no need to change platforms at Whitechapel. Otherwise, I would probably suggest looking at the National Rail station maps (which you can find by typing the station name into here), and working out what you would be most comfortable with.

Changing at Paddington from low level to high level isn't a long walk for most of the GWR non stop trains to Reading.The lower the platform number the better. It's different if you are catching a semi-fast 387 as they usually depart from the far side of Paddington, platform 14 often.
