Elizabeth Line - Warning meaning

Hello,
Travelling between Reading and Twyford without a ticket (as part of a longer journey from Stockport) where I had forgotten to buy a ticket between these 2 stations. This was on the Elizabeth line, and the inspector asked for my details only. He said that they will check of any repeat offences (none that I'm aware of) and it'll just be a warning if there are none. Looking at other posts on the forum, this doesn't seem to be the normal course of action - is this correct?

Firstly, welcome to the forum

I'll check on this in the morning, but just to clarify - was it a TfL inspector who stopped you?

If so... you will receive the standard Verification Letter from them shortly, where you should reply, give mitigation and apologize for what happened. The usual points you should bring up in reply to their letter have been mentioned in recent threads.

Given that this was just a no ticket, and not a pass misuse (we see a lot of pass misuse threads on here, which are more serious) there is potentially more of a chance TfL will let you off with a warning. This isn't guaranteed though and TfL usually prosecute instances of fare evasion in the magistrates court.

If this wasn't TfL however then you'll just have to wait for the relevant train company to contact you, usually by letter.

It goes without saying that hopefully your address can reliably receive mail, as all railway matters are sent via post unless otherwise stated.

Do you know who the inspector worked for?
Eg TfL or GWR

Thank you for your replies. I don't actually know, he was wearing a neck band with Elizabeth line written on it and had a card scanner, so I automatically assumed TFL. He didn't look to be wearing the colours of GWR.

I'm just wondering how much I can rely on what he said, in terms of him checking whether I have done it before and hence it being warning.

He won't be the one who checks. We don't see many cases of TfL taking details of people who *haven't* been abusing free passes so it is hard to say what will happen.

I fear you need to be mindful of the fact staff on the front line often say things to diffuse situations so you can't 100% reply on what was said unfortunately.

But I echo @AlterEgo 's point - most TfL cases we see on here are more serious than this (usually involve what is clearly deliberate evasion)

Keep proof of absolutely everything to do with the rest of your journey - tickets / itinerary that came with them etc etc, confirmation e-mails etc - in case you need it and you don't know what you might need yet so keep it all.
