I plan to travel from Canary Wharf to Tottenham Court Road on the Elizabeth Line and then to Euston on the Northern line. Is the process for tapping in and out the same as it would be for making a journey (with a change) on the established Underground lines?

Yes. Tap in at Canary Wharf and then tap out at Euston. No need to tap anywhere else.

I travelled in from Stevenage intending to head for Canary Wharf and asked an LUL staff member what would be best if I had tapped in with a TSGN Key Smart Card at SVG.

He told me unfortunately I would need to exit the station with my KeyGo card, tap in with my Oyster/Debit card and do the same in reverse on the return journey. He did say they hoped to find a slightly less onerous solution in the long run

That's no different than the change between a KeyGo service and the Circle Line at (for example) Farringdon.

Ultimately the answer to this thread is "for fares, always treat the Elizabeth Line like the Underground".

You could use a standalone validator at Farringdon, they are located at various points around the station, to touch out on KeyGo and touch in with Oyster/contactless.

Do be aware that I have personally had difficulties doing this in similar circumstances with KeyGo, using the standalone validators at Finsbury Park. I've had touch-ins recorded as touch-outs, and touch-outs recorded as touch-ins and ended up withj incomplete journeys as a result. GTR claim the issue is fixed but I haven't had a chnce to test it for myself.

I believe @Haywain has used the standalone validators at Farringdon to switch between KeyGo and contactless at Farringdon without any issues.

Lomg term the roll-out of contactless across the wider south-east region will mean that you will be able to touch-in a Stevenage and touch out at Canary Wharf. You can already do this is travelling from Welwyn Garden City or Hertford - it won't be too long before it comes to Stevenage as well.

I have definitely had this at FPK and at Moorgate

That's right. I've done it a few times now and as long as the two cards are kept apart (like holding one in each hand) it has worked well. My very first attempt didn't work well and it seems that was because they were in the same wallet!

Yes, Oyster/Contactless on the Elizibeth line works the same as the rest of the London train/tube/dlr (but not tram) network.

There are two types of interchange. "in-station" where you interchange without touching out "out of station" where you touch out and touch back in at a nearby station or a different part of the same station. Generally when interchanging in central London the barriers will force you to do the right thing.

Where things get messier is interchanges with the DLR, since DLR stations are generally unbarriered, it's not always obvious whether a given interchange is supposed to be "in-station" or "out of station".

For what it's worth, re the DLR...

'In station' interchanges:
  • Bank
  • Greenwich
  • Stratford
  • West Ham
  • Canning Town
  • Woolwich Arsenal (for NR)

'Out of station' interchanges...
  • Tower Gateway (for Tower Hill LU)
  • Shadwell
  • Lewisham
  • Bow Church (for Bow Road LU)
  • Custom House
  • Woolwich Arsenal for the seperate Woolwich Elizabeth Line station
  • All the possible Canary Wharf interchanges!

Yes. I experienced that yesterday. Signage for DLR and Jubliee Line sending people in one direction and in another for Elizabeth Line. I presume the name Crossrail Place predates Boris' decision to brand Crossrail as the Elizabeth Line.

I also observed one of the many entries to Bank has a sign saying for DLR use the other entrance across the street.

As people have stated it was easy changing between the Elizabeth Line and Northern Line at Tottenham Court Road.

The only time I actually got confused was leaving Greenwich station, when trying to touch out the machine made a funny noise and displayed a red light. There was a message as well but I didn't notice it in time. I tried again and got a green light and my TfL account shows the correct amount, so I presume I did the right thing by trying again.

Most likely it was already in design and/or construction stage by the time Boris took the awful decision to name the services as Elizabeth Line (making it sound like a Tube Service rather than a National Rail service) so just made sense to keep it as Crossrail place which sounds better than Elizabeth Line Place would anyway.

Limehouse (DLR/NR) is another out of station interchange (OSI). Even though there is a direct link between the westbound NR and eastbound DLR platforms, there is a gateline in the middle that serves as both touch out of one mode and touch in on the other. This is a better solution than found at Southwark/Waterloo East where there are two gatelines with a 'no man's land' in between that (iirc) cannot be reached other than via one of the gatelines.

My bold. No it doesn't. See this story on my site: https://oysterfares.com/limehouse-gate-confusion/
...
There is also a small link bridge between the Fenchurch Street bound c2c platform and the Poplar/Canary Wharf bound DLR platform. As you can see in the first picture there are a set of gates leading from the c2c platform. Immediately behind those gates is a large sign welcoming you to the DLR. I’d say it is a pretty reasonable assumption to make that once you’ve gone through those gates you have just entered (or touched in to) the DLR station. Sadly you haven’t; you’ve actually just exited (or touched out from) the c2c station.
...
You have to touch validators at the other end of the link bridge to touch in for the DLR.

There is the same no mans land at Limehouse, the only difference is its between the c2c gateline and the DLR validators.

  • Custom House
Custom House has the ludicrous design of being In Station from the DLR but Out Of Station onward to the Liz line. Go up the escalator from the DLR platform and there are the Liz entry gates, but no means to touch out from the DLR.

Indeed I believe shortly after opening, TfL had to hastily program special rules into Oyster to try and mitigate it, but unfortunately they don't cover every possible journey combination.
