Elizabeth line core ticketing

Hi all,

Trying to work out the best way to buy a ticket from Heathrow T4 to Tottenham Court Rd Elizabeth line, travel on 14/4/26 returning the same day both journeys mid-late afternoon.

I hold a non safeguarded Priv, I'm able to find heathrow to paddington tickets on RST online but obviously the core section tickets are unavailable.

Would I be best to buy a Heathrow to Abbey wood and argue a break in journey at Tottenham Court road?

Any advice appreciated!

Break of Journey on the Elizabeth Line between Paddington and Stratford and between Paddington and Abbey Wood is not allowed. I would suggest buying to somewhere like Kilburn High Road because then you can say you're changing at Tottenham Court Road anyway and you are no longer travelling on the Elizabeth Line when you decide to break your journey.

You may find it easier, if not inconvenient, to go up to Goodge Street because then it's obvious you're no longer using the Elizabeth Line when you end your cross-London transfer short of Euston. You just say "I'll walk to Euston from here" and they should let you out. Getting back in for the return journey to Heathrow might be trickier, though. You could do it at Euston.

(All of the above assumes you're okay to use London Underground on a Priv if it's a cross-London ticket - I assume so but I'm not super knowledgeable on Priv rules).

If you do break your journey when not permitted on the Elizabeth Line, the only recourse available to TfL under the NRCoT is to charge you an excess fare, which as far as I know they're completely incapable of doing at Elizabeth Line core section gatelines. So what will happen is anybody's guess.

If they try to tell you to pay a brand new fare, without giving any credit for the fare already paid, then that is not in line with the NRCoT.

Do I recall correctly that at Tottenham Court Road some changes between lines involve exiting the ticket gateline, walking across the concourse, and re-entering the ticket gateline? Hence it would be easy to just exit the station while changing.

Yes! I did this the other day. Elizabeth Line to Central Line. I was sitting at the rear of a Paddington bound train and the signs directed me up the escalator, through the barriers and down the Central Line escalator.

To the OP - do you hold an PAYG Oyster card and can be near selected EL stations before you travel? If it is registered, you can ask for your PRIV discount to be added to the card to obtain a discount and just tap in at Heathrow and out wherever you need. Just a thought.

I didn't know about that option. Sounds like the way to go!

Elizabeth to Central (and vice versa) involves crossing the gateline if you follow the signs. But it's hard to think of a plausible route between Heathrow and a non-Elizabeth Line NR station that involves that line change.

Would destination City Thameslink (changing from the Central line at St Paul's) be valid?

But there is no TVM allowing ticket collection at Tottenham Court Road, so the OP will presumably need to get the tickets for both the outward and the return journey at Paddington?

You cannot 'break' your journey on TfL (unless it is a Rover type ticket), but you can END your journey.
But coming back you wouldn't be able to enter at an intermediate station

OP can collect at Heathrow T4 where they begin.
