Elizabeth Line aircon in the core

I've taken the Elizabeth Line quite a bit this weekend and it feels like aircon is massively reduced or turned off in the core (eg Stratford to Paddington)?

Maybe just unlucky on the train set? I've been here since Friday and took lizzy line a lot and its been on and refreshing.

Yeah that's what I wondered but it's been 5 trains so far!

Sometimes I'm only able to feel the aircon in a specific carriage. I don't know what # it is, but I can tell you that the ceiling of that specific carriage is lower compared to the other ones(I think there are 2x of these carriages in the train). I'm always able to feel A/C there even when not in the rest of the train.

I would presume coaches 2 and 8, those are where the pantographs are.

Yes that sounds about right. If you stand in a specific position near the doors of this carriage, you can have the air blowing directly on you

The aircon on 720s and 730s is pretty poor by modern standards, so I'd assume as it's another Aventra unit, the 345 aircon will be poor too.

The 345 aircon is amongst the best of any train in my experience. Some (such as fiancée) even consider it too cold and will deliberately seek out hotter Tube lines!

Good to hear, they must have fitted weaker aircon to be 720/730s units.

Can only assume WMT and GA specced lower rated air con then or Alstom changed something in between builds

Of course, the aircon might’ve just been set to a lower level over the past couple of days when OP has been travelling.

I got on a 707 at the height of the heatwave and genuinely smiled as it felt like a fridge. I have been on this train on the warm days following and while you can tell A/C is on, it’s nowhere near as cold as it was during the heatwave. (and of course still colder than a 376)

Desiro Air Con has always been rather good, although admittedly I have had a few slightly unhappy 450s recently.

Was certainly cooler on the Elizabeth line train earlier than it is on the IET I am currently on.

They’re the same air con units, just different thermostat settings. For example, the 701s had pretty ineffective air conditioning up until recently when the thermostat was reduced and now it’s incredible .

The 701 AC was terrific when just the first train was introduced, I commented on it here at the time (2 years ago!). I presume someone then looked at the electricity bill and turned it down.

More straightforwardly, once a train is down to its balanced condition the AC is principally going to be getting rid of body heat, and the crush in the core means more work to do. More frequent door openings, and all of them instead of just those requested, is also going to play a part.

Might just be the air con running less efficiently because it's trying to exchange heat in a hot tunnel

I was on the Elizabeth line for the first time in some months this week. Passing from Paddington through Stratford and definitely noticed what felt like stronger AC once we exited the tube and hit Stratford.
