Whilst driving past Elgin yard this afternoon, I noticed piles of new ballast. I was wondering if anyone could possibly tell me what may be happening. Is this part of the Aberdeen – Inverness line upgrade, or is it anything to do with the transport of whisky from Elgin like there was at the end of last year?

There are going to be a number of bits of jointed track renewed next month. The rail is already in position between Alves GF and EL18 (up distant) plus a section to the east of Elgin. Another site has been cleared for unloading ballast which is due for unloading this coming week. It's just a planned re-lay and not part of the bigger upgrade announced.
